The world of rum: origin, style, taste

Rum is the most versatile spirit in the world, and that is exactly what makes it hard to get into. Two bottles made from the same sugar cane can taste like they have nothing in common. Here is where those differences come from.

Molasses or cane juice: what rum is made from

Rum is made mainly from molasses or from freshly pressed sugar cane juice. Molasses is the thick by-product of sugar production, and it carries the dark, heavy notes most people associate with rum. Distil the fresh juice instead and you get Rhum Agricole: grassy, mineral, noticeably fresher on the palate. Raw material and region of production shape a rum more than the brand on the label does. That is exactly why you can sort the database by both.

English, French, Spanish: the three style families

The English style is powerful and aromatic, with tropical fruit and spice. Jamaica still distils its rum traditionally in copper pot stills. The French style is built on fresh sugar cane juice and brings the grassy notes of Agricole with it, the way they shape the rhum of Martinique. The Spanish style is usually light and soft, with aromas like vanilla and caramel. In the highlands of Central and South America it produces soft rums with intense aromas. In the Caribbean you often find both side by side, molasses and cane juice rums from the same region. Rum regions differ sharply, through their historical roots and through local rules about what may even be called rum.

White, gold, dark, spiced: the types at a glance

White rum is light and fresh, with fine citrus notes. Gold and aged rum matures in charred oak casks and shows mild wood aromas. Dark rum goes further, towards dark chocolate and tobacco. Spiced rum is infused with spices or fruit flavours after distillation, which makes it a type of its own rather than a maturity level. How much sugar ends up in the bottle is something the community records in its ratings. That is why sweetened and unsweetened rums sit here as separate types.

With this rum, many have discovered their love for rum. By the sweetness and complaisance the ideal entry. Meanwhile, however, it is clearly too sweet and one-dimensional for me. Nevertheless, a recommendation for all who want to collect their first steps in the pure enjoyment of spirits.

This is a very well balanced rum from Zacapa and I like is a lot especially considering the price tag. The nose is heavy with spice and sweetness and a touch of orange zest and chocolate. The palate is well rounded with caramel, honey and chocolate topped of with burnt oak and overripe fruits. It has a long, sweet and fruity finish with burnt oak. I'd say this one is better than the bottling from the late 90s and early 00s that won medals. Price to quality is very good.

Yes, RumX is free to use, and will remain so in the future. It is important to us that every rum fan has free access to the community and all information. To ensure the further development of the app, RumX relies on a sustainable business model: when a user purchases a bottle via the integrated marketplace, RumX receives a small commission from the retailer without any additional costs for the buyer. This allows the platform to be financed and continuously improved, while all users can continue to use the core functions of the app for free. For every rum we collect the offers from the connected online shops and put them side by side on one page: price, availability and shipping costs together. More than 40 European rum shops are connected, and the offers are updated continuously. So you see not only what a bottle costs, but also which shop actually has it in stock right now. If a rum is too expensive for you, you can set a price alert: every price that has already fallen is listed under price drops, and as soon as the price drops, a message goes to your email address.

You add the bottle to your basket directly on RumX and pay with your RumX account. The seller and contractual partner is always the shop itself: it packs the order and sends the delivery to you. For you that means you do not have to create a separate account with every merchant to buy their products. If bottles from several shops are in your basket, each shop ships its own part, with its own delivery and its own shipping costs.

Not for browsing. The rum database, all community ratings and the price comparison are open without signing up. You only need a free account once you want to take part yourself: leave your own ratings, keep your collection, set price alerts or order through the marketplace. An email address and a password are enough for that. Access to the community and to all content stays free, for members and guests alike.

In the RumX app you add every bottle to your collection and record whether it is sealed, open or empty, what you paid for it and how you rate it. You find new bottles through search or through the built-in label scanner, so you simply hold the label in front of the camera. The app works out how many bottles you have open and what your collection is worth, and your tasting notes stay attached to each bottle for good. It is free for iOS and Android.

We sort the catalogue by the distinctions that actually help when buying: white rum, aged rum and Rhum Agricole by production and maturation, sweetened and unsweetened rums by their sugar, plus rarities for everything beyond 250 euros. On top of that you can filter by country, distillery, brand and bottler, because origin and distillery often say more about the taste than the category does. If you have no direction at all yet, the taste finder on the homepage takes you to a shortlist in four questions.

The recommendations come out of your own ratings and those of the community. The more rums you rate, the more precisely a suggestion hits your taste: the AI looks for tasters whose verdicts resemble yours, then looks at what else they like. Added to that are the flavour tags from more than 310,000 ratings, which describe what a rum actually tastes like. The result is rum recommendations that fit your profile, instead of one best-of list that looks the same for everybody.
