How rum auctions work

How to bid

Pick a lot. “Bid” opens it at the auction house, where you register and bid. RumX does not see your bids and does not sell the lots itself.

What a lot really costs

On top of the bid come the house's buyer's premium and shipping, and for houses outside the EU also import VAT and possibly customs duty. Each house sets its rates in its terms. The final price is only known when the auction ends.

What to check

Compare bottling, vintage and strength with the rum page, check fill level, label and closure on the house's photos, and read the end time in your time zone.

Is a rum cheaper at auction than in a shop?

Sometimes, often not. Buyer's premium and shipping come on top of the bid, and the final price is only known when the auction ends. If a shop stocks the same rum, its price is shown next to the lots.

Who checks a lot's authenticity and condition?

The auction house. Each house describes how it checks in its terms. RumX does not inspect the lots itself.

Why are the lots marked “Ad”?

The auction houses pay RumX to list their lots. We still order the list by end time alone. A house can book a labelled space above the list as premium partner, but never a better rank within it.

How current are the lots?

Lots come in from the auction houses twice a day. When a lot ends, it disappears from the page right away. The current bid is on the house's page.
