Hunter Laing

Hunter Laing is a Scottish family firm better known for whisky, but its Kill Devil range has become a reliable source of aged single cask rum from the distilleries collectors chase. The approach is straightforward: source well-aged casks, bottle them in small outturns — often a few hundred bottles — and put the distillery, year and still on the label. Most Kill Devil rums are European-matured ex-bourbon casks, which gives them a drier, woodier profile than tropical ageing.

Strength is where opinions split. Many releases land at 46%, and several drinkers wish for cask strength instead — the recurring note is “Fassstärke würde ihm gut tun.” The high-ester Hampden and Caroni bottlings, often done with The Whisky Barrel, draw the warmest reactions.
