Velier Uitvlugt SP - ICBU SP - ICBU 1988Deep, balanced tropical-aged Demerara sipper
Velier is the most influential independent bottler in modern rum. Run by Luca Gargano from Genoa, it turned overlooked tropical-aged rum into the most sought-after bottles in the world: the legendary Demerara series, the closed Caroni distillery of Trinidad, and the pure single rum movement it helped define.

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

Velier is an Italian company, founded in Genoa in 1947 as a small spirits importer. In 1983 Luca Gargano bought into it, at the time a marketing director at one of Italy's biggest import houses. He turned the company towards something nobody was doing: bottling rum that had aged fully in the tropics, at natural cask strength, with no sugar added and full transparency about distillery, vintage and ageing.
That sounds obvious now. In the mid-1990s it was the opposite of the market. Rum was sold as a soft, agreeable blend, age statements were decoration, added sugar was standard, and nobody printed which still the spirit came off. Velier printed it, along with distillation year, bottling year, cask count and often the annual angel's share. That transparency is what turned Velier bottles into collector grails, not the marketing.
Anyone looking for quality tiers in rum ends up at the Gargano Classification, which Luca Gargano presented in 2015. It sorts rum not by age, country or colour but by how it was distilled. One thing matters up front: it is not a quality ladder. A Traditional Rum is not worse than a Pure Single Rum, it is made differently. What the system delivers is honesty on the label, the way single malt does for whisky.
You can walk all four tiers through Velier's own range, because the bottler covers nearly all of them. A Foursquare from Barbados marries pot still and traditional column from the same distillery, which makes it a Single Blended Rum. Blends drawing on several distilleries, like Veritas or Papalin, fall outside the Single categories altogether, because there is more than one house in the glass.
| Tier | How it is distilled | Example at Velier |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Single Rum | 100 % pot still, one distillery | Habitation Velier Hampden LROK |
| Single Blended Rum | Pot still and traditional column, one distillery | Velier Foursquare Plenipotenziario |
| Traditional Rum | Traditional single or double column | Velier Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 21 |
| Modern Rum | Modern industrial multi-column | Not part of the Velier range |
Caroni in Trinidad is why most people know Velier at all. The state-owned distillery was sold to Angostura in 2001 and shut down in 2002. In 2004 Luca Gargano stood in a decaying warehouse in front of casks that had been sitting forgotten for years, bought a large part of the remaining stock, and released the first bottlings in 2005. There is no new Caroni, and there never will be.
The style is unmistakable: tar, burnt rubber, leather, engine oil, dried tropical fruit underneath. It came off column stills rather than pot stills, which makes Caroni a Traditional Rum in Gargano's own system and is why the labels read Heavy Trinidad Rum rather than pure single. The Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 21 from the 1996 vintage is the reference point most people start from. The end of the line is the Caroni 39th Release, The Last: 23 years tropically aged, 61.9 percent, 5,274 bottles. Shorter-aged editions such as the Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 12 sit below the old vintages, but none of them is a beginner's purchase any more.
The second pillar is Demerara from Guyana. The country once had dozens of sugar estates with their own distilleries. Today exactly one is left: Diamond. The historic stills of the closed houses were rescued and moved there, among them the wooden double pot still of Port Mourant and the wooden Coffey column of Enmore. What remains of the estates is a code on the cask: the still mark.
Velier bottled those marks systematically through the 2000s and in doing so created a vocabulary collectors still use. A mark tells you which still the spirit came off, and that shapes the flavour more than any label copy does. Skeldon, Albion and Uitvlugt are gone as places; the runs are tiny, sometimes in the hundreds of bottles, and prices have moved accordingly.
| Mark | Still | Bottling |
|---|---|---|
| SWR | Coffey still, Skeldon | Skeldon SWR 1978 |
| AN | Wooden continuous Coffey | Albion AN 1994 |
| ULR | Savalle column | Uitvlugt ULR 1997 |
| SVW | Coffey still, Diamond | Diamond SVW 1996 |
| SVSG | Pot still and column combined | Diamond & Versailles SVSG 1996 |
Habitation Velier is the line for living distilleries and the strictest application of Velier's own classification: everything in it is pure single rum, 100 percent pot still from a single house. The labels read almost like spec sheets. Distillation year, bottling year, cask type, number of bottles, ester content in grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol and the annual angel's share are all printed on them.
The core comes from Jamaica. Hampden supplies marks such as LROK, HLCF and the extremely ester-rich DOK; Long Pond contributes TECA and TECC, and its TECA counts among the most intense rums made anywhere. Add Worthy Park with the Forsyths WPM and Clarendon with EMB. Beyond the Caribbean the line reaches Savanna on Reunion with the white HERR and MHOBA in South Africa.
A family of its own are the Clairins from Haiti: unaged rum from fresh cane juice, made by small producers such as Vaval, Sajous and Casimir, with wild fermentation and no adjustment to Western palates. For a lot of people that is the most honest rum Velier carries.
One thing explains most of the price tags at Velier: tropical ageing. A cask sitting in Guyana or Trinidad loses roughly 6 to 10 percent of its contents to the air every year. In Scotland it is around 2 percent. After twenty years in the tropics a cask often holds only a fraction of what went in, and that remainder is concentrated, dark and wood-driven in a way a cool climate does not reach in the same span.
That is why the angel's share is printed on so many Velier labels. It is not decoration, it is the arithmetic behind the price: more evaporation means fewer bottles from the same cask. A twenty-year-old tropically aged rum is not comparable to a twenty-year-old rum that spent most of its life in Europe, which is why tropical ageing and the bottle count sit so prominently on these labels. It also explains the second half of the equation: distilleries such as Caroni, Skeldon and Albion are closed, so the number of casks left can only go down.
Velier has a reputation for being unaffordable. That holds for Caroni and the old Demerara marks, but the range starts a long way below them. The obvious way in is Veritas, the white blend of Foursquare and Hampden at 47 percent, which works in cocktails and still shows what unsweetened rum tastes like. Right next to it sits Papalin Jamaica 7, a blend of pure pot still distillates that makes the Jamaican style approachable.
If you want to know what rum tastes like without a cask, take a Clairin Communal, the blend of four Haitian producers. For the Jamaica route without the big jump there is the Hampden 1753 HLCF and the sherry-cask Hampden Pagos, one of the most-rated Velier bottlings on RumX. And if you want something genuinely different: the Rivers Royal Grenadian from River Antoine on Grenada arrives at 69 percent from a water-wheel-driven mill.
All of those sit in double digits. Every bottling on this page links through to its product page, where the price comparison runs across all partner shops, so you are not relying on a number that will be out of date in a few weeks.
On RumX the Velier range splits into two different lists. The most-rated bottles are the accessible icons: the Royal Navy and its offshoot Tiger Shark, the Hampden collaborations, and the Foursquare run around Absolutio. These are bottles enough people actually bought and opened.
The highest median scores sit elsewhere, on the old, rare and powerful releases. Uitvlugt SP ICBU 1988, Skeldon SWR 1978 and the late Caroni releases lead the field, but on a far smaller number of ratings. Few people open a bottle that trades in four figures. So read the ranking on this page together with the rating count: 90 points from 250 ratings is a different signal from 96 points from 43.
