Admiral Rodney is St. Lucia Distillers’ flagship aged range, honouring Admiral George Rodney and the ships of his fleet at the 1782 Battle of the Saintes. The rum itself comes from the heavier distillate at the bottom of the Coffey column still, which gives it more body than a typical light column rum despite the modest strength.

Most expressions age in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, often in the nine-to-twelve-year range, and the bulk of the line sits at 40%. That build gives the house signature: vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, raisins and dried fruit over warm wood and gentle spice. The HMS Princessa is the lightest and most wood-forward; HMS Royal Oak (Extra Old) adds cocoa, prunes and a longer finish; HMS Formidable and HMS Monarch are the softer, fruit-sweet entries that reviewers hand to newcomers. The Officer’s Releases step up the interest with cask finishes, N1 on port and N2 on Irish whisky casks bringing licorice, candied fruit and a faint peaty, medicinal note to the glass.

How it tastes in practice: sweet, round and confectionery-led, with oak and warm spice behind. It drinks easily neat or over a single large cube, which is how several members prefer the Royal Oak and the Officer’s bottlings. The lighter Monarch and Formidable also hold up in a simple mixed drink or an old fashioned when you want something gentle. A common note is that the 40% strength keeps things mild and occasionally lets a little alcohol poke through, so people wanting punch tend to steer toward the finished editions.
