The House of Angostura is best known worldwide for its aromatic bitters, but it has distilled rum in Trinidad for well over a century. Rum runs off TDL’s column stills from molasses, giving a lighter, cleaner base than pot-still islands nearby, then ages in the tropical climate before blending.

The own-label range spans everyday and premium tiers. White Oak is the light mixing white; Tamboo is a spiced spirit drink built on vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Moving up, the 1824 is the flagship aged expression, and limited runs like the Zenith Caroni blend, the Firkin single cask and the Tribute Distiller’s Cut round things out. Beyond the official bottlings, independent bottlers release single casks labelled TDL, many from prized 2003 and 2008 vintages that the community rates highly.

On taste, the thread running through nearly every review is menthol and mint, often with roasted wood, dried figs, raisins, peach, litchi and a metallic or faintly medicinal streak. One reviewer described a 2003 cask as “endless mint in the finish” over juicy peach. The 1824 reads sweeter and rounder, with caramel, vanilla and stone fruit; the Tribute Cut punches above its 44.7 percent with cocoa, spice and exotic fruit.

How people drink it depends on the bottle. The aged 1824 and the TDL casks are sipped neat, and one member called the 1824 “parfait en old fashioned.” The Tamboo and White Oak lean toward mixing, showing up in cuba libres, rum and cola, and an Old Cuban. Newcomers use the range as a gentle step up from basic Spanish-style rums into something spicier and more complex.
