Arcane comes from Mauritius and is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice, the same starting point as agricole rums from Martinique and Reunion. That cane-juice base is what many reviewers taste first, even in the sweeter bottlings, and it gives the whole line a fresh, vegetal backbone.

The range covers a lot of ground. Cane Crush is an unaged white, transparent and grassy, with citrus, grapefruit bitterness and white pepper; several members rate it well as a value sipper and cocktail base. Delicatissime Grand Gold rests around 18 months in oak and shows vanilla, herbs, almonds and gentle spice. Extraroma Grand Amber is the sweet, aromatic flagship, thick with banana, coconut, caramel and vanilla. Flamboyance, aged in cherry wood, is lighter and less sugary and tends to win over drinkers who find the ambers cloying. Banane Flambee and Vanille des Iles push hard into dessert territory, banana dominating both.

How they taste depends on the label. The sweetened expressions are round, soft and easy, sometimes to the point of feeling synthetic; the drier ones bring more of that raw cane freshness and a bit of alcohol bite. Ratings run from the low 6s on the sweeter ambers to the 8s and 9s on Cane Crush and Flamboyance.

Most people drink the amber and flavored bottlings neat as an after-dinner pour, or lengthened with cola and ice where the sweetness suits a longdrink. Cane Crush earns its keep in a Ti’ Punch or a daiquiri, and chilling the sweeter rums takes some of the sugar edge off.
