Brugal has made rum in Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic’s north coast since the 1880s, and the 1888 bottling nods to that founding year. The house leans into the Spanish, or Dominican, style: column-distilled rum from molasses, aged in the Caribbean heat and increasingly finished in sherry casks that lend dried fruit and nutty depth.

The lineup spans a wide price ladder. At the bottom sit the Añejo Superior 5 Years and the Blanco Especial Extra Dry, both reviewed mainly as mixers; the white makes a passable daiquiri and the five-year handles a Cuba Libre without complaint. In the middle are the Extra Viejo and XV Ron Reserva, woody and spiced but criticized for sweetness and a lack of length. The 1888 Doblemente Añejado is the flagship sipper, double-aged and sherry-influenced, and the Leyenda and limited Coleccion Visionaria and Leyenda anniversary editions sit at the richer, sweeter end.

In the glass expect vanilla, caramel and toffee up front, dried fruit and raisin from the sherry casks, toasted oak, leather, cinnamon and clove, and a chocolate or coconut note on the better bottles. Finishes tend to run short and a touch sweet, sometimes slightly sticky.

Reviewers who like the 1888 and Leyenda sip them neat, often letting the glass rest fifteen minutes and warming it by hand to coax the aromas out. The younger expressions go into rum and cola, mojitos and daiquiris. A soft, sweet pour like the Leyenda pairs well with a cigar after dinner or stands in for dessert. If you want a beginner-friendly Dominican ron, this is a reasonable place to start before judging whether Brugal is for you with a review.
