Bumbu The Original is the sweetened, lightly flavoured bottle made for mixing, Bumbu XO is the drier, longer-aged one made for sipping, and Bumbu Cream is a rum cream liqueur. The Original is the soft, sweet rum that built the brand and the one most people mean by Bumbu. The XO is a different animal: made in Panama, aged far longer in ex-bourbon casks and finished in sherry casks, which makes it drier and woodier. The Cream is not a sipping rum at all, it is made to be poured cold. So Bumbu is really two products under one name plus a liqueur: if you want the famous sweet pour, go Original; if you want something to sip, go XO.

Bumbu Original tastes of banana, vanilla and caramel, clearly sweet, with a touch of baking spice from the added flavouring: banana, sweetness, vanilla and caramel are what the RumX community picks out again and again in its tasting notes. That smooth, candy-like profile is exactly what fans love, and the criticism you hear from the other side is that it is too sweet and tastes artificial. Both are true at once, and which one matters is down to what you want from a glass. The XO moves away from the banana towards toffee, coffee and orange over vanilla, caramel and wood, and the Cream is rich with coconut and vanilla.

Yes, sugar is added: Bumbu Original carries a heavy dose of sugar plus natural flavouring, which is why many experienced drinkers file it with the spiced rums or liqueurs, and on RumX all three Bumbu bottles are listed as spirit drinks on a rum base rather than as rum. In the EU a spirit may only be called rum if it contains no more than 20 g/L of sweetening, is not flavoured and has at least 37.5 % ABV. The Original is sweetened and flavoured, the XO is drier and more cask-driven but flagged as sweetened in our product data as well, and the Cream is a cream liqueur. That is exactly what the EU category line on each of their product pages shows, and it is a statement about what is in the bottle, not a verdict on quality: plenty of people love exactly this style. One thing to check on the label is strength. The Original we list runs at 35 %; if you see 40 % quoted for an Original, you are looking at a different market's bottling, which is not the same drink. Bumbu Original is distilled and blended on Barbados, according to its owners, while the XO is distilled in Panama. The eight countries the brand mentions refer to the origin of the sugarcane, not to where the rum is made. On Barbados the Original is cut with what the brand calls limestone-filtered water from the island, then sweetened and lightly flavoured, which is where its banana, vanilla and baking-spice character comes from.

Bumbu Original is the sweetest and most openly flavoured of the three, leaning banana and vanilla, Don Papa is sweet and candied with more orange but a touch less syrupy, and Ron Zacapa is the smoothest and most polished. Plenty of people arrive at rum through Bumbu, and that is a perfectly good door. Drink the Original over ice, in a long drink with cola or ginger beer, or even poured over vanilla ice cream as a dessert, and sip the XO neat in a tulip glass or build a rum old fashioned around it. The Original's sweetness makes it a poor fit for sharp, citrus-led cocktails, where the sugar clashes. Bumbu Cream belongs in the fridge, served cold over ice or as a float on a dessert cocktail.
