Buy Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan is the world's best-known spiced brand, named after a real Welsh privateer who never distilled rum. The most important question about it is a legal one: the flagship Spiced Gold, at 35 percent and flavoured, is not rum but a rum-based spirit. The RumX community rates accordingly soberly, with one Jamaican exception at the very top.

  • Cheap, reliable cola mixer
  • Vanilla-forward spiced profile
  • Private Stock a decent sipper

The RumX Guide to Captain Morgan

Which Captain Morgan is actually rum

The most asked question about this brand is answered bottle by bottle in our database. The Original Spiced Gold carries 35 percent and added flavours, so it misses both EU criteria for rum, the 37.5 percent minimum strength and the ban on flavouring, and is sold as a rum-based spirit. Black Spiced and Private Stock do carry 40 percent but stay in the same category because of their flavourings. Other bottles do not carry that classification: the Dark Rum at 40 percent, the White Rum at 37.5 and, historically, the Black Label Jamaicans. We only label what we can evidence, so where no EU note appears we are not making a claim either way. On every RumX product page the category sits right under the name, and our sugar measurements return Spiced Gold, Black Spiced and Private Stock all as sweetened.

The real Captain Morgan: privateer, not distiller

Henry Morgan existed: a Welsh privateer of the seventeenth century who sacked Spanish cities like Portobelo and Panama on behalf of the English crown, was knighted for it and died a plantation owner and lieutenant governor of Jamaica. He never distilled rum, the connection is pure marketing. The brand is a product of 1944, invented by the Canadian spirits group Seagram, and the famous pose with one foot on the barrel only arrived in the 1980s. Since 2001 Captain Morgan has belonged to Diageo, the largest spirits group in the world.

From a Kingston pharmacy to St. Croix

The origin of the recipe is the brand's best story: the Kingston pharmacy Levy Brothers bought young rum, among others from Long Pond, and steeped it with herbs and spices. In 1944 Seagram bought the rights to exactly that blend, plus the distillery. Production later spent decades in Puerto Rico, and since 2010 the US production has sat on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. From the Jamaican era come the Black Label bottlings, real, unsweetened Jamaica rums that trade as collector pieces today.

Spiced Gold, Black Spiced, Private Stock: which is which

The range sorts itself by sweetness and strength. The Original Spiced Gold is the standard: soft, vanilla-led, sweet, made for cola, and filed by the community at 5.0/10 across more than 310 ratings as exactly what it is, a long-drink building block. The Black Spiced at 40 percent adds cinnamon, clove and roasted notes (6.0/10), and the Private Stock is the brand's best regular bottle at 7.0/10, denser and creamier, workable as a starter sipper on ice. The flavoured line is the basement stairs: the Tiki Mango & Pineapple at 25 percent sits at 3.0/10.

How to drink Captain Morgan

Honest answer: mixed. Captain and cola is the classic, and zero cola instead of regular makes the very sweet Spiced Gold noticeably more drinkable. Ginger ale or ginger beer push the spice instead of the sugar, which suits the Black Spiced better. The Private Stock works neat on ice as a first step into sipping. And if you want to know where the road leads, compare it once, side by side, with an unsweetened cask-aged bottle from our unsweetened overview, that one comparison explains more about rum than any advertising.

Most popular vs highest rated on RumX

The numbers are blunt: across more than 50 listed bottlings the median sits at 5.0/10, no brochure talks that honestly. Most rated is the Spiced Gold, but the highest rated is a piece of history: the old Captain Morgan Black Label from the Clarendon distillery, a Jamaica overproof at 73 percent, holds 7.8/10 and keeps showing up in searches with the word value attached, collectors know why. Behind it, the Private Stock at 7.0/10 is the best bottle still on shelves. The ranked list above shows where each bottling lands.

The Captain Morgan lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

Frequently Asked Questions about Captain Morgan

The flagship Original Spiced Gold is not: 35 percent and added flavours miss the EU criteria for rum, so it is a rum-based spirit. Black Spiced and Private Stock also do not count as rum because of their flavourings, despite 40 percent. The real rums in the range are the Dark Rum, the White Rum and the historic Black Label Jamaicans. RumX product pages always state the category right next to the name.

By community rating the historic Black Label from Clarendon at 73 percent, a real Jamaica overproof at 7.8/10, today only found as a collector piece. From the current shelf the Private Stock at 7.0/10 is the best pick, followed by the Black Spiced at 6.0/10. The Spiced Gold at 5.0/10 remains a pure mixer.

The Original Spiced Gold has 35 percent, Black Spiced, Private Stock and Dark Rum have 40, the White Rum 37.5. The flavoured variants like Tiki sit well below that at 25 percent. The historic extreme is the old Black Label at 73 percent.

None: Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold is the brand’s standard product. In everyday language it is called Captain Morgan, Spiced Gold or Original Spiced, all meaning the same golden, vanilla-sweet rum-based spirit at 35 percent.

Yes, Captain Morgan 0.0 is an alcohol-free take on the Spiced Gold flavour profile. Legally and technically it has nothing to do with rum any more, which is why it is not part of the RumX database, we catalogue rum and rum-based spirits.

The Spiced Gold is classic supermarket promo stock and almost always on offer somewhere, Black Spiced and Private Stock cost a little more, and only the old Black Label collector bottles reach serious prices. RumX compares live prices for every bottling across more than forty shops, so you catch the promo cycle instead of the list price.

Since 2001 the brand has belonged to Diageo, the largest spirits group in the world. It was invented in 1944 by the Canadian group Seagram, which bought the spice recipe of a Kingston pharmacy and the Jamaican distillery Long Pond. For the US market it has been produced on St. Croix since 2010.
