More About Clément

Clément began at the Habitation Clément near Le François in Martinique, where Homère Clément planted the estate in the late nineteenth century. The name has become one of the more recognisable in rhum agricole, and the old plantation house still appears on the labels and packaging that reviewers often admire.

Production follows the agricole method: fresh-pressed sugarcane juice fermented and column-distilled, then aged in a mix of French and American oak and ex-bourbon casks. That gives the aged rhums their signature dryness, with vanilla and spice from the wood layered over grassy, mineral cane. The Single Batch Chauffe Extrême takes the wood further, with heavily charred casks producing roasted, smoky, nutty notes that bourbon drinkers tend to enjoy.

The range is broad. Canne Bleue is a floral, herbal white made from a single cane variety. VO and VSOP are the everyday bottlings, light and citrusy with modest cask spice. XO, the Vieux 10 ans and Vieux Colonne Créole move into orange, honey, tobacco and dried fruit, usually described as clean and refined but sometimes short on the finish. At the top sit the Cuvée Homère and the cask-strength Selection Exclusive batches, richer with cocoa, hazelnut and dark spice.
