The Darboussier name goes back to Jean Darboussier, a French trader and smuggler, and to a sugar factory founded in Guadeloupe in 1869. The modern brand builds on that heritage with a small range of aged rums that have gathered a steady following on RumX.

Despite Guadeloupe’s association with agricole, Darboussier rum is molasses-based and column distilled. The rums are tropically aged on the island in oak, with maturation spread across ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-Armagnac barrels. That cask mix shows in the glass as toffee, brandy-like fruit, plum and dried-fruit sweetness alongside wood and spice.

The catalogue runs to six bottlings. The Hors d’Âges, a blend of roughly six to eight year old stock, is the most reviewed and the most discussed, praised for a nose that shifts in the glass from alcohol into wood, smoke and spice. The Rhum Vieux 6 ans is the value pick, often found near 37 to 40 euros, with cinnamon, blackcurrant and honey on the nose. The Select Casks, Rhum vieux de Guadeloupe and Cuvée Spéciale Premium round out the line, some of them rare carafe releases with little information online.

Taste-wise, expect floral and fruity opening notes, vanilla, marzipan and biscuit, a naturally sweet palate and a vegetal, spicy backbone. Finishes tend toward wood, coffee and licorice, though several drinkers wish they ran longer. Most people sip these neat to follow how they evolve, which suits a quiet evening or a tasting flight more than a cocktail. The consistent caution: the younger expressions can read wild or thin, so this is a house that rewards patience and a developed palate.
