The RumX Guide to Diplomático

What is Diplomático?

Diplomático is the flagship brand of Destilerías Unidas (DUSA), founded in 1959 in the Venezuelan state of Lara, where the distillery grows part of its own sugar cane. What makes the house unusual is the hardware: a copper pot still, a rare batch kettle and a continuous Barbet column run side by side, and every bottling is a blend of the three. The pot still brings weight and fruit, the kettle a creamy, toasty middle, the column a clean, light spirit. The result is the house style most people know from their first bottle: soft, rounded and clearly sweet, with orange peel, toffee, dried fruit and dark chocolate. Read the full breakdown in Diplomático Deconstructed.

Botucal becomes Diplomático: the story behind the German name

If you bought this rum in Germany or Austria between 2012 and early 2026, the label read Botucal. The reason was a trademark: the discounter Aldi owned the spirits mark Diplomat, and in March 2012 a court ruled that Diplomático was too close to it. The importer needed a new name for the German-speaking market and chose Botucal, after the Venezuelan town where the brand's story began. Everywhere else in the world the same bottles kept the name Diplomático.

In December 2025 Brown-Forman Deutschland announced the end of the split: from spring 2026 the German and Austrian bottles carry the global name too, starting with the Reserva Exclusiva, the rest of the range following batch by batch. Nothing in the bottle changed with the label. On RumX both names live on this one page: bottles logged as Botucal and bottles logged as Diplomático are the same entries, so the ratings do not split, and the search finds either name.

Molasses instead of cane honey: the recipe change of 2026

The new label came with a second, quieter change. For decades Diplomático distilled its heavier components from virgin sugar cane honey, a concentrated cane juice, and the lighter ones from molasses. In February 2026 Brown-Forman Deutschland confirmed that the whole range now runs on 100 percent molasses from Venezuelan cane, because the last producer of cane honey in the country had stopped making it years earlier. The switch covers the Tradition range (Reserva Exclusiva, Mantuano, Planas, Selección de Familia) and the Prestige range (Single Vintage, Ambassador). The Distillery Collection, the three single-still bottlings No. 1 Batch Kettle, No. 2 Barbet Column and No. 3 Pot Still, has been discontinued.

What that means for your glass is an open question, and the community is the best place to answer it. Most reviews on this page describe bottles from the cane honey years. If you taste a Diplomático-labelled Reserva Exclusiva, note the batch and the year in your review: in a year we will know whether the profile moved.

The range: Reserva Exclusiva, Mantuano, Planas, Single Vintage, Ambassador

The bottle almost everyone means is the Reserva Exclusiva, a pot-still-heavy blend at 40 percent, the most rated rum on RumX and winner of the 2025 Community Award as most popular rum. The community puts it around 7 out of 10: beginners and cocktail drinkers love the soft sweetness, experienced palates find it thin and heavily dosed. The Mantuano is the drier, column-led sibling at the same price level and rates about the same. The Planas is the white rum of the range, filtered clear after ageing, and the one the community rates lowest.

Above the Tradition line the picture changes. The Ambassador Selection at 47 percent, finished in PX sherry casks, and the Single Vintage bottlings at 43 percent both sit around 8 out of 10, a full point above the flagship. If you liked the Reserva Exclusiva and want to know what the house can do with more strength and less sugar, that is where to look.

Sweetness: what the community argues about

No other topic runs through the Diplomático reviews like sugar. The Reserva Exclusiva and the Mantuano are logged as sweetened rums on RumX, and the tasting notes read accordingly: caramel, vanilla, a syrupy texture, a short finish. For a first bottle that is exactly why it works. For anyone who has moved on to unsweetened rum it is the reason to reach for the Ambassador or a Single Vintage instead. If you want the same softness with less dosage, the community's usual next steps are Ron Zacapa for the sweet camp and Planteray for a drier, cask-driven profile at the same budget.

The Diplomático lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

Frequently Asked Questions about Diplomático

Diplomático. Since spring 2026 the German and Austrian bottles carry the global name too, starting with the Reserva Exclusiva and the rest of the range step by step. Botucal was only the name for the German-speaking market from 2012 to 2026.

Yes. Same distillery, same recipe, same bottlings, just a different label for Germany and Austria. A Botucal Reserva Exclusiva and a Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva from the same year are the same rum. On RumX you find both names on this page and in the search.

Because of a trademark. Aldi owned the spirits mark Diplomat, and in 2012 a court ruled that Diplomático was too close to it. The importer switched to Botucal, the name of the Venezuelan town where the brand’s story begins. In 2026 Brown-Forman ended the split.

Yes. The Reserva Exclusiva is logged on RumX as a sweetened rum, and its soft, syrupy texture with caramel and vanilla is exactly what beginners like about it and experienced drinkers criticise. If you want less sugar, the Ambassador or a Single Vintage are the drier picks within the brand.

By community rating, the Ambassador Selection and the Single Vintage bottlings: both sit around 8 out of 10, the flagship Reserva Exclusiva around 7. For the money, the Reserva Exclusiva is still the bottle most people start with. The ranking at the top of this page sorts live by rating.

No. Since 2026 the whole range runs on molasses from Venezuelan cane, because the last producer of cane honey in the country stopped making it. The Distillery Collection has been discontinued. Whether the profile shifts because of it, the reviews of the coming batches will show.
