Matusalem began in Santiago de Cuba in 1872, and after the family left the island the brand re-established itself, with production now based in the Dominican Republic. The house built its name on the Spanish, or Cuban-style, solera method, blending rums of different ages to a smooth, rounded profile rather than chasing intensity.

The range is broad for a single brand. The Solera 7 Años and blanco Platino sit at the entry level, made mainly for cocktails. The Clásico competes on price with standard Bacardi and Havana Club, and several reviewers concede it earns respect there despite its very sweet, simple character. Above that, the Gran Reserva 15 Años is the everyday reference point, and the Gran Reserva Solera 23 Años adds a little more depth.
