Buy Old St. Croix

Old St. Croix is the current name of the Danish rum house that traded as A.H. Riise until June 2025. Both names point back to the same man: Albert Heinrich Riise, a pharmacist who settled in the Danish West Indies in 1838 and exported his rum under the Old St. Croix label. The house style is soft and dessert-leaning, built on sweetened blends rather than dry spirit, and it splits opinion in the community more than almost any other brand on RumX.

The RumX Guide to Old St. Croix

From A.H. Riise to Old St. Croix: what changed

On 13 June 2025 the house retired the name A.H. Riise and returned to Old St. Croix, the label Albert Heinrich Riise used for his exports in the 19th century. The change covers more than 30 markets and applies to the company and the brand of the same name. Nothing else moved: same blends, same bottlings, same recipes. Sister brands Santos Dumont and Tranquebar keep their own names.

On RumX both names sit on this page, and each bottle keeps the name printed on its own label. That matters for a collection: a bottle in your cabinet that reads A.H. Riise stays an A.H. Riise. The two most-rated bottlings show how far the house style splits opinion, Non Plus Ultra Black Edition against Non Plus Ultra Very Rare. The bottler hub at Old St. Croix additionally holds the Santos Dumont bottlings, which this brand page does not.

The Old St. Croix lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

Frequently Asked Questions about Old St. Croix

Old St. Croix. The change took effect on 13 June 2025 across more than 30 markets and covers both the company and the brand of the same name. Recipes and bottlings are unchanged. On RumX both names live on this page: bottles labelled A.H. Riise keep their name but belong to the same brand.

It is a return rather than a reinvention. Albert Heinrich Riise already sold his rum as Old St. Croix in the 19th century, named after the island of St. Croix in what are now the US Virgin Islands. The house says the name is easier to pronounce, travels better internationally and names the origin directly.

The community is split, and the numbers show it. Across the brand’s 50 bottles the typical score is 7.5 out of 10 from 3,363 ratings, but the spread is wide: the most-rated Non Plus Ultra Black Edition sits at 7.0, the Non Plus Ultra Very Rare at 8.0. If you like soft, sweet rums you will rate these highly. If you want dry, punchy bottlings, much lower. The rating distribution on this page shows you the split directly.

The rum comes from St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, the former Danish colony of the Danish West Indies. 47 of the 50 bottles on RumX list the Virgin Islands as their origin, two list Denmark. The house itself sits in Dragør near Copenhagen today, where the blends are assembled and bottled.

It is a person’s name. A.H. stands for Albert Heinrich, and Riise is the surname of the Danish pharmacist who arrived on St. Thomas in 1838 and ran a pharmacy there. His rum began as an ingredient in medicines and was later exported for pleasure. The Santos Dumont brand belongs to the same house but keeps its own name.

For eleven of the 50 bottlings RumX shows the EU classification as a spirit drink on a rum base rather than rum. The reason is dosage, meaning added sugar above the limit EU regulation 2019/787 sets for rum. That is a statement about labelling, not about quality: the house markets these bottles deliberately as a fine spirit made from aged rum.

This expression has earned praise for its exceptional quality and represents the pinnacle of what Old St. Croix has to offer.
