Pampero comes from Venezuela and carries the pampero name from the wind that sweeps the plains where the country’s cane grows. For many drinkers it was an early rum, the affordable bottle on the shelf that introduced them to the Spanish style before they moved on to pricier stocks.

Production sits firmly in the column-still, Spanish tradition: light molasses distillate, aged in ex-bourbon oak, then blended and, in most expressions, sweetened. That dosage is the recurring theme in reviews, giving the rums a soft, syrupy edge that flatters cola but limits how far they go neat.

The core range is small and easy to navigate. Pampero Blanco is the unaged white, light and a touch grassy, aimed at cocktails. Pampero Especial is the light gold everyday pour, all vanilla and almond with a noticeable ethanol lift. Pampero Selección and Anejo Especial sit in the middle, sweet and undemanding. Pampero Aniversario is the flagship, darker and rounder with treacle, chocolate, brown sugar and a peppery fade. The rare Old Venezuelan Rum bottling runs drier and older, and reviewers rate it a step above the standard line.

On the palate expect caramel, vanilla, light oak, cocoa and almond, a mild body and a short finish. Nobody here calls these funky or heavy.

Most people drink Pampero long: rum and cola, a Cuba Libre, or a rum mule, and several bakers use the Especial and Estelar in rum cake and desserts. The Aniversario is the one worth trying neat, ideally after it has had time open in the bottle. For price-led weeknight drinking it does the job; for complexity, look higher up the shelf.
