Papa Rouyo is one of Guadeloupe’s newer agricole distilleries, based around Goyave and Basse-Terre, and its story is still being written — a point reviewers raise often, framing early batches as the start of something rather than a finished catalogue. The house works with named cane varieties, including the monovarietal B80.689 (nicknamed “matos”) grown by partner planters, and reduces its rums slowly with spring water from the mountains above Saint-Claude.

Production leans on pot-still (alambic à repasse) distillation from fresh sugarcane juice, with no added sugar or caramel, no cold filtering and no rectification. The whites can be bottled at full strength (brut de colonne) or reduced; some are rested briefly in stainless steel, and others matured longer, as the Blanc Maturé 450 jours shows.

The range covers unaged whites (Le Rejeton Blanc, VWAYAJ, Sanblaj ESB, Cuvé Nr. 12), rested and matured whites (Brut d’Alambic 120 jours, Blanc Maturé 450 jours) and the first aged rums, the 3 and 5 Vieux Jénérasyon. The whites taste of fresh cane, lime and grapefruit, grass and pepper, with a mineral, iodine-and-brine finish; the longer-rested versions turn rounder, picking up vanilla, yellow fruit and mirabelle. The aged rums add toasted oak, dried fruit, tobacco and spice at 46%, with wood and alcohol sitting cleanly together.

Most drinkers use the whites in a Ti’ Punch — their natural home, as more than one reviewer puts it — or in a daiquiri where the dryness carries through; the Cuvé Nr. 12 even gets a mention in a simple Sprite highball. The matured whites and the Vieux work better neat, best after a little air. Pricing comes up frequently: solid for the aged rums, debated for a 50-euro white.
