Pusser’s traces its recipe to the British Royal Navy’s daily rum ration, the “tot” handed out until Black Tot Day on 31 July 1970. The brand revived that blend commercially and still markets itself as the original Admiralty rum, with Admiral Nelson’s name woven through the labels.

Most of the core range is Guyanese Demerara, much of it carrying the Port Mourant stamp that reviewers pick out as woody, oily and dark. The limited editions reach wider: the Deptford Dockyard Reserve and Coronation Reserve blend high-ester rum from Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados, aged a minimum of three years in charred ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at Gunpowder Proof, 54.5%.

The lineup runs from the 40% British Navy and Original Admiralty (Blue Label) through the 54.5% Gunpowder Proof (Black Label), the Aged 15 Years, a Gunpowder Proof Spiced, a 75% Overproof, and anniversary releases like the 50th Anniversary and the collectible older Nelson’s Blood 15 Year.

Expect molasses, burnt caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, nutmeg and licorice, with roasted and peppery edges from the higher-proof bottlings. The Admiralty and some standard releases lean sweeter; the reserves and Black Label come across drier and more layered. Lighter, lower-proof versions can read hot or short.

Drinkers sip the Black Label and Aged 15 Years neat or over ice, and reach for the British Navy as a mixer. It is the traditional base for a Painkiller and a Dark ’n’ Stormy, and works in a rum Old Fashioned. The Overproof gets used for cocktails and flaming. A dark, spice-forward house style for cold-weather sipping and tiki building alike.
