Negrita is one of the oldest names in French-market rum, a Bardinet brand that spread across Europe as an affordable blend aimed squarely at everyday mixing and the kitchen. Its reputation among enthusiasts is modest, but its reach is enormous: in Spain, one reviewer noted, it is among the most widely available and cheapest rums on the shelf.

The standard range is made as blended molasses rum bottled at 37.5% ABV, which is the single factor most reviewers blame for its thin, diluted character. Expect light wood, vanilla and a touch of sweetness on the nose, then a short, slightly sharp palate with little depth. The “Old Nick” vintage line is the outlier. Some editions trace back to Dillon on Martinique, carry agricole and tropical-fruit notes, and the mid-century bottlings show molasses, leather, tobacco, cocoa and dried fruit that the modern blend never reaches.

How it tastes in practice depends entirely on the bottle. The everyday rums are built for Rum and Coke, Cuba Libre, mojitos and Dark ’n’ Stormy variations, and for crêpes, cakes and other desserts where the label itself suggests its use. For neat sipping, look to the old Old Nick releases if you can find a sample, and accept that even fans call them interesting rather than great.
