Zacapa is made by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala and named after the town of Zacapa in the country's east. Its base is virgin sugar cane honey: juice from the first pressing of the cane is heated, clarified and reduced to a syrup-like concentrate. That is not molasses, but it is not fresh-fermented cane juice like rhum agricole either. The spirit then matures at the House Above the Clouds in Guatemala's highlands, in a Sistema Solera that blends younger and older rums in stages. The payoff is a rum that tastes rich and rounded well before its age statement would suggest.
The solera method comes from sherry and works differently from classic cask ageing. Instead of leaving one batch to rest and bottling it whole, the rum is moved in stages: only part of the oldest cask is drawn off, and it is topped up with younger rum from the tier above. The age statement therefore names the oldest component in the blend, not the age of the bottle. For the Zacapa 23 that means components of roughly 6 to 23 years, brought together in the Sistema Solera.
The second factor is altitude. Zacapa matures at around 2,300 metres in the highlands of Guatemala, where it stays cool all year. Maturation runs slower, the cask gives less aggressively, and the rum gains depth instead of raw wood. It rests in a sequence of ex-bourbon casks, American oak casks that bring vanilla and caramel, and sherry casks for the darker, dried-fruit side. The XO adds a finish in cognac casks of French oak. The style was shaped over decades by master blender Lorena Vásquez, one of the best-known master blenders in spirits.
The core of the range is Zacapa 23, the Solera Gran Reserva, a blend of components aged roughly 6 to 23 years in the solera and the bottle most people mean when they say Zacapa. Above it sits Zacapa XO, the Solera Gran Reserva Especial, finished in ex-cognac casks of French oak for a more elegant, drier edge. The 30 Aniversario and the darker, fuller Edicion Negra round out the line, while the rare Royal is the top expression of the range. If you are starting out, the 23 is the reference; step up to the XO when you want more cask character and a drier finish.
| Bottling | Alcohol | Casks | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zacapa 23 | 40 % vol | Ex-bourbon and sherry casks | Soft, caramel and honey, long sweet finish |
| Zacapa XO | 40 % vol | Ex-bourbon and sherry, finished in cognac casks | More elegant and drier, clearer wood |
| Edición Negra | 43 % vol | Heavily charred ex-bourbon casks | Smoky, dark chocolate, more grip |
| 30 Aniversario | 40 % vol | Ex-bourbon and sherry casks, longest maturation | Deeper and more concentrated, dried fruit |
Zacapa is built to be sipped neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or a tumbler with one large cube. Its sweetness and vanilla-caramel weight make it an easy after-dinner pour, closer to a dessert than to a dry sipping rum. It also works in a rum old fashioned or a short, stirred cocktail, but skip it in anything sharp or citrus-led, where the sugar fights the drink. A light chill tames the sweetness if you find the 23 too rich.
The 23 is the bottling almost every online shop carries, and therefore the one with the widest price spread. The price row on this page pulls together the current offers from the connected shops, with availability and shipping, so you do not have to compare in five tabs before placing an order. With the XO and the 30 Aniversario the choice thins out noticeably, and availability decides more than price.
With older stock, check the name on the label. Zacapa has reworked its naming more than once: the Centenario 23 became the Sistema Solera 23, and older goods carrying the previous label sometimes trade well above the current bottle. Of the versions on the shelf three are genuinely common: the 23, the XO and the Edicion Negra. For a first step into the brand the 23 is the safe pick; as a gift, the XO arrives in a wooden box.
Zacapa sits in the soft, sweet sipping-rum camp, so the bottles people cross-shop are its neighbours in style. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva from Venezuela is the closest rival, similarly rich but with more dried fruit and a touch more body. Don Papa from the Philippines is sweeter and more vanilla-forward, an easy crowd-pleaser. Zaya is the value pick in the same lane. If you like Zacapa 23 and want a step drier and more complex, the XO or a Diplomatico single vintage is the natural next bottle.
The 23 is by far the most logged Zacapa in the RumX community, the bottle everyone tries first. But the scores tell a second story: the older and rarer expressions, the XO, the 30 and the limited Reserva Limitada releases, climb higher with experienced drinkers, who reward the extra wood and the drier finish. The pattern is classic Zacapa: start sweet and easy with the 23, then chase the drier, deeper bottles as your taste shifts. The ranked list above shows where each expression lands.

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.
