Buy Wagemut Rum

Wagemut is the rum brand of German independent bottler Nicolas Kröger, built on hand-picked single casks from some of the Caribbean's best distilleries, Foursquare in Barbados above all. The cask-driven PX-Cask became its calling card, and the range now runs from sherry and cognac finishes to a sixteen-wood experiment series and Wagemut's own distilled rum.

The RumX Guide to Wagemut Rum

What is Wagemut?

Wagemut is the rum label of Nicolas Kröger, a German master blender and former bartender whose bottles also carry the producer name N. Kröger. He built a large following on his Wagemut YouTube channel with blunt, honest tastings, and the same ethos drives the brand: bottle at natural strength, state the age and cask, add no sugar and never dress a rum up as something it is not. The range began as single-cask selections from leading Caribbean distilleries, above all Foursquare in Barbados, and grew into one of Germany's most active independents, with a members club, a yearly advent calendar and, more recently, Wagemut's own distilled rum. The thread across the range is transparency: no added sugar, so where a bottle tastes rich it is the cask talking and not dosage.

Wagemut PX-Cask, XO and Maduro: which is which

The bottle most people mean by Wagemut is the PX-Cask, a Foursquare Barbados rum of around ten years finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, soft and sweet with raisin and dried fruit straight from the cask, and the most logged Wagemut on RumX. Stepping up, the XO is an older Foursquare at eighteen years, drier with more oak and depth. The Maduro from the Aficionado Collection leans darker and spicier, built with cigar lovers in mind. Softer and lower in strength, the Ida van der Ille is the easy, approachable end of the range. Start with the PX-Cask, then move to the XO or a cask-strength special as your taste turns drier and stronger.

Single casks, the Fasssprache series and Wagemut's own rum

Beyond the core bottles, Wagemut is really a single-cask house. Most releases are one-off casks from Foursquare, T.D.L in Trinidad and Worthy Park in Jamaica, picked and bottled in small numbers, which is why the same rum can sell out and never return. The Fasssprache series takes that further, finishing one base rum in sixteen different woods, from American and French oak to mizunara, cherry and walnut, so you taste the cask itself rather than the spirit. Most recently Wagemut has begun distilling its own rum, including a First High Ester Batch, a move from selecting other people's casks to making the spirit from scratch. Many of the rarest casks appear first as Members Only and Members Edition bottlings for the brand's members club, which is hosted on RumX.

How to drink Wagemut

Wagemut is built for sipping neat in a tulip glass. The PX-Cask and Ida van der Ille are the easy entry pours, soft enough at standard strength to drink without water. The cask-strength specials and the Members and Special Editions, often well above 50 percent, reward a few drops of water to open them up. None of them carry added sugar, so what you taste is the cask and the age, and the drier cask-strength and single-cask bottles in particular keep their shape in a rum old fashioned. Save the rare single casks for neat sipping, where the cask choice is the whole point.

Most popular vs highest rated on RumX

The most logged Wagemut in the RumX community is the PX-Cask, the bottle most people meet first, sitting at a solid 8.0/10 across more than three hundred ratings. The scores climb on the rarer, older and stronger releases: the Members Only 2026 and several cask-strength Special Editions reach about 8.5/10 with experienced drinkers, who reward the extra age and cask intensity. It is a consistent range, rarely a dud, and the ranked list above shows where each cask lands.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wagemut Rum

Yes. The flagship PX-Cask holds about 8.0/10 on RumX across more than three hundred ratings, and the range scores consistently well, with the rarer cask-strength Members and Special Editions reaching about 8.5/10. The PX-Cask is an easy, sweet-tasting beginner favourite while the cask-strength and single-cask releases reward experienced drinkers, and because none carry added sugar the brand has a strong reputation for honest, transparent bottlings.

Most Wagemut rum is Caribbean rum chosen cask by cask, above all from Foursquare in Barbados, plus T.D.L in Trinidad, Worthy Park in Jamaica and others. It is selected and bottled in Germany by Nicolas Kröger. The newest releases are distilled by Wagemut itself rather than sourced.

It depends on the bottling, and none of them carry added sugar. The flagship PX-Cask and the sherry and PX releases taste rich and sweet from the cask, with raisin, dried fruit and vanilla. The XO, the cask-strength editions and the older single casks run drier and woodier. So the sweetness, where it is there, comes from the cask rather than from dosage.

It depends on the bottling. The PX-Cask sits in the mid price range for premium aged Barbados rum, while the rare cask-strength Members and Special Editions cost more and often sell out. RumX compares live prices for each Wagemut bottling across more than forty shops, so you can see the current best offer rather than a single list price.

Wagemut is the brand of Nicolas Kröger, a German master blender and former bartender who runs the Wagemut YouTube channel. On many bottles and price lists the bottler appears as N. Kröger, the same person behind the brand. His stated mission is honesty and transparency: tell people exactly what is in the glass and never dress a rum up as something it is not.

It is rum, mostly aged Caribbean rum from Foursquare in Barbados. The PX-Cask’s sherry-cask finish and rich profile lead some newcomers to ask whether it is really rum or even a whisky, partly a running joke from Nicolas Kröger’s own tastings. The answer is that it is genuine aged rum, bottled with full transparency on origin, age and cask, and it declares no added sugar, so any sweetness comes from the cask rather than from dosage.

The PX-Cask is Wagemut’s flagship, a Foursquare Barbados rum of around ten years finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. It is soft and sweet with raisin and dried fruit from the cask, and carries no added sugar, which is why it became the brand’s calling card. It holds about 8.0/10 on RumX across more than three hundred ratings.

Start with the PX-Cask, the everyday reference, then step up to the older, deeper XO or the darker, spicier Maduro. On RumX the highest scores go to the rarer cask-strength releases, such as the Members Only and several Special Editions, which experienced drinkers rate above the core bottles, so chase those once you know what you like.
