Wagemut is the rum label of Nicolas Kröger: Caribbean rum chosen cask by cask, above all from Foursquare in Barbados, and bottled to a clear ethos: natural strength, age and cask stated, and never dressing a rum up as something it is not. Beyond the core bottles it is really a single-cask house. Most releases are one-off casks from Foursquare, T.D.L in Trinidad and Worthy Park in Jamaica, picked and bottled in small numbers, which is why the same rum can sell out and never return.

Around that core the brand has added a yearly advent calendar and, more recently, its own distilled rum, including a First High Ester Batch, a move from selecting other people's casks to making the spirit from scratch. Many of the rarest casks, such as the Members Only 2026, appear first as Members Only and Members Edition bottlings for the brand's members club, which is hosted on RumX.

Every year since 2021 Nicolas Kröger has released a Special Edition, each built on its own idea, usually in the cask. The newest, Special Edition 2026, is an 18 year old rum from Guatemala that spent three of those years in very old port casks, still wet with the port they travelled in, with no colouring and no added sugar according to the label. Because the port comes through, it is labelled a spirit drink rather than a rum, as the 2021 edition was. The PX-Cask is a Foursquare Barbados rum of around ten years blended with Pedro Ximenez sherry, soft and sweet with raisin and dried fruit, the XO an older Foursquare at eighteen years, drier with more oak and depth, and the Maduro from the Aficionado Collection darker and spicier, built with cigar lovers in mind. The RumX community tags them the same way: sherry, sweet and raisin on the PX-Cask, woody, cask and vanilla on the XO, sweet, walnut and raisin on the Maduro. The PX-Cask is the brand's calling card and also comes as a cask-strength edition at 58.7 percent. Softer and lower in strength, the Ida van der Ille is the easy, approachable end of the range.

The PX-Cask and the sherry releases taste rich and sweet, while the XO, the cask-strength editions and the older single casks run drier and woodier. Start with the PX-Cask, then move to the XO, the Maduro or a cask-strength special as your taste turns drier and stronger.

Wagemut is rum, not whisky: most of the range is aged Caribbean rum from Foursquare in Barbados, bottled as rum with age and cask stated. A few bottles RumX lists as spirit drinks on a rum base instead, for legal reasons rather than quality ones. The PX-Cask blends rum with PX sherry, and because a rum may not have wine added, it is sold in the EU as a rum-based spirit, which is what its product page shows; RumX lists its cask-strength edition and the PX-Cask Kleiner Bruder the same way. The Ida van der Ille at 33.2 percent sits below the 37.5 percent the EU requires for rum. None of this is about added sugar. PX stands for Pedro Ximenez, a Spanish sherry made from grapes dried in the sun until they are almost raisins, one of the sweetest wines there is and the source of raisin, fig and date notes. Where it gets interesting is how it reaches the rum. A cask finish means the rum rests in an emptied sherry cask and takes what the wood gives back. The Wagemut PX-Cask works differently: rum and PX sherry are blended. The producer describes it as using freshly emptied casks still wet with sherry, which is the same thing said gently.

That distinction is not cosmetic, it decides what the bottle may legally be called: in the EU it is sold as a rum-based spirit, not as rum. A range this transparent about age and cask is a fair place to learn the difference between a blend and a finish.

Nicolas Kröger, a German master blender and former bartender, is behind Wagemut, and on many bottles and price lists the bottler appears as N. Kröger, the same person. Trained behind the bar and later at Rum Depot in Berlin, he is known to a large German-speaking audience for the video tastings on his Wagemut YouTube channel, which name faults as readily as merits. His stated mission is honesty and transparency: tell people exactly what is in the glass.

Wagemut is built for sipping neat in a tulip glass. The PX-Cask and Ida van der Ille are the easy entry pours, soft enough at standard strength to drink without water. The cask-strength specials and the Members and Special Editions, often well above 50 percent, reward a few drops of water to open them up. The drier cask-strength and single-cask bottles in particular keep their shape in a rum old fashioned. Save the rare single casks for neat sipping, where the cask choice is the whole point.
