Rum from Belize

Belize is the Caribbean rum nation that almost did not happen. Britain wanted its timber, not its sugar, and for a century the sugar houses fed their molasses to cattle rather than distill it. Today this small Central American country has four rum makers, one of them, Travellers, world famous, and is the only full WIRSPA member on the mainland. Its rum is mostly molasses, mostly column-distilled, and quietly beloved by independent bottlers.

The RumX Guide to Belize

The latecomer of Caribbean rum

Belize sits in the far northeast of Central America, bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea, and was a British colony known as British Honduras until 1973. Britain's interest here was timber, not sugar, so rum came late: the colony exported just 16,000 litres in 1881, because the sugar houses preferred to feed their molasses to cattle than sell it for distilling. Real rum-making only took hold in the second half of the 20th century. In 2021 Belize became the only full WIRSPA member on the Central American mainland.

Four makers, one famous name

Belize has four rum producers. Travellers, founded in 1953, is the international face, synonymous with Belize rum. Copal Tree, founded in 2015, is the youngest and the only one chasing a cane-juice, sustainability-led path with its Copalli rum. Cuello's distillery and L&R Liquors, whose Old Master brand is a local staple, belong to two branches of the Cuello family and have little international reach.

A column-rum country

With no agricole tradition, the great majority of Belize rum is distilled from molasses on continuous column stills, sourced from the country's two sugar mills. Travellers is the textbook example: a mid-20th-century molasses distillery that pulls three different marques off its column at 95, 90 and 85 percent, including one it calls high ester, then blends and ages them in ex-bourbon casks. The style is clean and tropical, a workhorse spirit that takes long aging well.

Copalli's different path

Copal Tree, in southern Belize, is the country's counterpoint. Founded in 2015, it makes Copalli rum from environmentally sustainable fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, an agricole-style approach rare in this part of the world, built around a single-estate, low-impact philosophy. It quickly drew international attention as Belize's modern, eco-minded face, even if its volumes and ratings remain small next to the deep well of aged Travellers stock.

Most popular vs highest rated

The everyday face of Belize is Travellers' own Belizean Blue Signature Blend and the Don Omario's Vintage, named after the founder. But the top scores belong to the independent bottlers who buy Travellers distillate: bottlings like the Spirit Gallery Belize 2007 reach 8.8/10, and the Rumclub Private Selection Ed. 38 is among the most reviewed Belize rums on the platform. The house is modest; the cask stock is special.
