Rum from the South Pacific archipelago is dominated by one distillery, South Pacific in Lautoka, and one distinctive signature: heavy pot-still spirit loaded with esters. The islands’ molasses and warm, humid maturation push these rums toward overripe tropical fruit, glue and burnt-rubber notes that drinkers often compare to Jamaica — but with a salty, slightly metallic twist that’s their own.
The community has a clear favourite era. The 2001 vintages, bottled by independents, draw ratings from 8.5 to 9.6/10, with reviewers calling out apricot, pineapple, olive and old melted wood. As one member put it after tasting ten Caronis, a good 2001 still landed in his weekend top five. The younger and Plantation releases split opinion more sharply.
