Funky pot-still esters with solvent, tropical fruit and burnt-rubber intensity
Rum from Fiji comes almost entirely from one place: the South Pacific Distillery in Lautoka, which has been fermenting molasses since the late 1970s. The island’s heat, humidity and long fermentations push its pot-still spirit toward a loud, estery profile — think glue, nail polish and burnt plastic sitting next to overripe pineapple, banana and yellow stone fruit. Drinkers often compare the funk to Jamaica, but the Fijian version runs more metallic and solvent-driven.
The community reception splits clearly by bottling. The independent single casks — especially the 2001 and 2014 vintages — draw ratings up to 9.1/10, while the gentler, sweetened Plantation releases land closer to 6.5–7.5/10. Across 4,660 reviews the median sits at 8.0/10.
