Rum from Guyana

Guyana is the last home of the wooden still. Its rum, called Demerara after the river and region, is the heavy, dark backbone of British navy rum, and Guyana is the only place on Earth where wooden pot stills and a wooden Coffey still are still running. Three centuries of distilleries have collapsed into one, Diamond, which keeps every historic still alive.

The RumX Guide to Guyana

Demerara rum and the wooden stills

Guyanese rum is sold as Demerara rum, named for the river and region around the capital. Its signature is a heavy, dark, pot-still character that was the backbone of British navy rum for centuries. The reason is wood: greenheart, a local timber so hard it cannot be cut with ordinary tools and does not rot underwater, was used to build still vats. Guyana is the last place on Earth where these wooden stills still run.

From three hundred distilleries to one

Guyana once had around 300 rum distilleries, mostly strung along the Demerara. Consolidation cut that to 44 by 1908, eight by 1960, and today just one: Demerara Distillers at Diamond. As estates like Skeldon, Albion, Versailles, Enmore and Uitvlugt closed, their stills were carried to Diamond rather than scrapped, turning it into a living museum of distilling.

The marks: PM, EHP and VSG

Each lost estate lives on as a mark, a code for the still and recipe that made it. Port Mourant (PM) comes from the world's last double wooden pot still; Enmore (EHP) from the last wooden Coffey still; Versailles (VSG) from a single wooden vat. The French Savalle column even recreates the marks of long-gone estates like Albion. Reading the code on a bottle tells you exactly which still made it.

El Dorado and what Demerara means

The flagship is El Dorado, launched internationally in the early 1990s, with the 15 Year its best-known bottle. Diamond also feeds the navy-rum world: Pusser's, Lemon Hart, Lamb's and Wood's all lean on Demerara rum. Since around 2016 a Demerara Rum Geographical Indication protects the name, so it must be distilled in the region. That is why XM, bottled in Guyana but distilled elsewhere, cannot call itself Demerara rum.

Most popular vs highest rated

On RumX the gateway is El Dorado, especially the 12 Year and 15 Year. The summit, though, belongs to aged single-mark rum from the closed estates, bottled by the likes of Velier and Cadenhead. Vintage Uitvlugt tops 9.9/10, and old Port Mourant, Albion and Skeldon sit among the most prized rums in the world. Demerara rewards patience like nothing else, so the rails above are where to begin.

Frequently Asked Questions about Guyana

Demerara rum is rum from Guyana’s Demerara region, protected by a Geographical Indication. It has a heavy, dark, pot-still character, much of it from greenheart wooden stills, and it is the traditional base of British navy rum.

Metal was scarce but greenheart wood was abundant, so early distillers built their stills from it. The surviving wooden stills, Port Mourant, Versailles and the Enmore Coffey, are the last of their kind in the world and all now run at Diamond.

Essentially yes. Demerara is the region and the protected name, and almost all Guyanese rum is distilled at the one remaining distillery, Diamond, run by Demerara Distillers.

El Dorado is the flagship brand, and its 15 Year is the most famous bottle. Navy-style brands like Pusser’s, Lemon Hart and Lamb’s are also built on Demerara rum from Diamond.

No. XM, made by Banks DIH, is not distilled in Guyana, so under the Demerara Rum GI it cannot be labelled Demerara rum even though it is bottled and sold there.
