Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos

Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos is a joint-venture distillery in the Dominican Republic, co-owned by Barceló and Yazoo Investments together with two Dominican families, that distils mainly for its owners and sells nothing under its own name. The owners age its spirit and bottle it under their own labels, and much of the rest leaves the country in bulk, which is why AFD shows up on RumX under other names rather than its own. Published figures put its output at roughly 12 to 19 million litres of spirit a year, in the same league as Brugal, so neither can safely be called the bigger one.

Above all Barceló, plus brands supplied through the other partner Yazoo Investments, such as Siboney according to an industry profile, and bulk spirit that AFD sells abroad; independent bottlers such as Compagnie des Indes and 1423 name AFD on some of their casks. Barceló goes back to Julián Barceló from Mallorca, who arrived in 1929, founded his company in 1930 and, by the house's account, launched the Barceló rums in 1950. Its rum is distilled at AFD from cane juice, then aged and bottled under the Barceló name. The flagship is the Imperial, aged by the house's account for up to ten years in American and French oak, and the RumX community describes it mostly with vanilla, sweetness, wood and caramel. The other co-owner, Yazoo Investments, has Venezuelan roots, ages spirit in the free trade zone of San Pedro de Macoris in what it says are more than 90,000 casks today and exports most of it to dozens of countries. It is a reminder that one quiet distillery can sit behind a surprising number of labels you already know.

No: AFD distils cane juice rather than molasses, but takes it to about 95 to 96 percent on a multi-column still, which strips out the grassy cane character of a Martinique-style agricole. What is left is a very clean, light spirit, the Spanish-heritage style in pure form. That still makes AFD the rare big Dominican distillery that works from cane juice. The brands bottled from it are smooth, brand-led rums, made for easy drinking.
