Clarendon

Clarendon is the rum you have almost certainly drunk without knowing it. Jamaica's biggest distillery by volume, it ships most of its spirit abroad in bulk, and a large share becomes Captain Morgan. Yet the same Monymusk marques, aged for decades and bottled by independents, are among the most sought-after Jamaican rums on the planet.

  • Legendary 1995 EMB vintage
  • Intense tropical fruit and menthol
  • Distinct dirty Jamaican funk

The Clarendon lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

The RumX Guide to Clarendon

Monymusk: rum since 1794

The site in Clarendon parish was long known as Monymusk Estate, where rum has been distilled since at least 1794. It passed through C.J. Ward (the same man behind Appleton), the Lindo Brothers and the United Fruit Company before the modern distillery was built in 1949. The Jamaican government stepped in to save it in 1976, and in 1980 it became part of National Rums of Jamaica alongside Long Pond.

The Captain Morgan engine

Clarendon makes around 15 million litres of pure alcohol a year, more than any other Jamaican distillery. The vast majority leaves as bulk spirit, and a large share is bottled by Diageo as Captain Morgan for the European market, an arrangement that alone accounts for a big slice of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. What is left feeds the house brand Monymusk and smaller labels like Port Royal and Smatt's.

Two distilleries in one

Clarendon is really two adjoining distilleries. A big four-column still, rebuilt in a 2009 expansion part-funded by the EU, makes roughly three-quarters of the output, a light, near-neutral spirit at very low ester levels. Alongside it sit pot stills, one of them among the largest in the Caribbean, making heavier marques up to MLC at around 550 esters. The rum is then aged off-site at the Innswood facility.

Monymusk, the marque and the brand

Monymusk is both Clarendon's name in the trade and National Rums of Jamaica's own brand, with a Monymusk Overproof launched in 2011. Source guides place Clarendon at the lighter, more mixable end of Jamaican rum, the kind that shines in a mojito or with ginger beer, in contrast to the heavy funk of Hampden. The deeper character only really shows once the heavier marques get years in oak.

Most popular vs highest rated

RumX tracks over 360 Clarendon and Monymusk bottles with thousands of ratings, and the picture is striking. The distillery's bread and butter is anonymous bulk, but its highest community scores, several above 9/10, all go to aged single-marque rum bottled by independents like Velier and Rum Sapiens, mostly 1990s vintages. Decades in oak turn Clarendon's quiet distillate into some of Jamaica's most prized rum.

Frequently Asked Questions about Clarendon

Monymusk is both the trade name for Clarendon distillery and the house brand of National Rums of Jamaica. The names Clarendon and Monymusk are used interchangeably for the same distillery.

Much of Clarendon’s bulk spirit is bottled by Diageo as Captain Morgan for the European market. Captain Morgan sold in the US is distilled mainly in St Croix, not Jamaica.

National Rums of Jamaica, a venture whose owners include Demerara Distillers, Maison Ferrand and the Jamaican state, with Diageo holding a stake in the Clarendon operation.

Both, but mostly light. Its column still makes around three-quarters of the output as near-neutral spirit, while its pot stills make heavier marques up to MLC. Clarendon is known as the more mixable, gentler Jamaican.

Because the distillery mostly sells in bulk, independent bottlers buy single marques and age them for decades. Those bottlings, often 1990s vintages from the likes of Velier, reach above 9/10 on RumX.
