Clément

Rhum Clement is one of Martinique's most famous names, but Habitation Clement is no longer a working distillery. Distillation stopped here in 1989; the rum is made at Le Simon and, increasingly since 2017, at J.M's Fonds-Preville. What Habitation Clement is today is a beautiful aging estate and museum, where the brand's rum rests in oak under the gaze of its founder, Homere Clement.

The RumX Guide to Clément

A brand, not a distillery

This matters for understanding what is in the bottle. Habitation Clement stopped distilling in 1989, when production moved to the Le Simon distillery. Since 2017 the new-make increasingly comes from Fonds-Preville, J.M's distillery. Both belong to the same owner, GBH. So Clement is a heritage brand and aging house, distilled by sister distilleries, not a place where cane is crushed today.

Homere Clement, the uncrowned king

Dr Homere Clement was a radical socialist politician who served as Martinique's deputy in the French National Assembly from 1902 to 1906, popular enough to be called the uncrowned king of the island. He bought a sugar mill in the Acajou region in 1883 and added a distillery. His son Charles marketed the family's first rhum agricole and helped write the very AOC criteria that govern Martinique rum today.

A museum and an aging estate

Bought by Yves Hayot in 1986 and turned into a rum-history museum in 2005, Habitation Clement is one of the island's most popular destinations. About 12,000 barrels rest in five on-site warehouses. Rum enters new American oak at around 62 percent for maximum vanilla extraction, then moves to ex-bourbon, with some finishing in virgin French oak or ex-wine casks. Visitors can walk the now-silent original distillery, its stills cut open to show the workings.

The aging ceiling

The angel's share at Habitation Clement runs about 8 percent a year, and a cask drops roughly 1 percent ABV per year. That sets a practical ceiling on how long the rum can age before it falls below the 40 percent floor the AOC allows, which is part of why genuinely old Clement vintages are scarce and prized. Barrels of the same vintage are occasionally consolidated to slow the loss.

What the RumX community drinks

The community's highest-rated Clements are the old vintages and limited bottlings: the Clement 1976 and the Rare Cask Collection releases like the Non Plus Ultra 2000 sit near 8.8 to 8.9/10. These come from the distillate the brand laid down decades ago, before production moved between Simon and Fonds-Preville, and they show the deep rancio and dried-fruit complexity that long French-oak aging gives Martinique rum.

At Le Simon distillery, and increasingly since 2017 at Fonds-Preville, J.M’s distillery. Both belong to GBH, the same group that owns the Clement brand. The rum is then aged and bottled at Habitation Clement.

The angel’s share is about 8 percent a year and ABV drops roughly 1 percent annually, so there is a practical limit on how long the rum can age before falling below the AOC’s 40 percent floor. Genuinely old vintages are therefore scarce.

Yes. It is one of Martinique’s most popular destinations, with a rum-history museum, photogenic aging warehouses, and the now-silent original distillery whose stills are cut open to show how they worked.
