A 1996 distillery with a 100-year head start

Foursquare is young, but the Seale family has been in Barbados rum since R.L. Seale & Co. opened in 1926. For four generations they were blenders: buying, ageing and marrying rum. When Sir David Seale rebuilt the dormant Foursquare sugar factory into a distillery in 1996, that century of blending knowledge came with it. That is Foursquare's quiet edge.

Richard Seale and the blend-only philosophy

Master distiller Richard Seale is rum's most outspoken purist. No added sugar, no shortcuts, honest labelling. Almost every Foursquare is a blend of pot-still and column-still rum, married before ageing so the flavours grow together as they mature. To Seale, that balance is the Barbados style, and he has spent a career defending it.

Exceptional Cask Selection: the cult releases

The Exceptional Cask Selection (ECS) turned Foursquare into a collector phenomenon. These are single blends finished in port, madeira or sherry, bottled at cask strength with full transparency. Names like Criterion, Plenipotenziario and Détente trade well above retail, and Foursquare took the International Spirits Challenge Supreme Champion title twice, in 2018 and 2021. More than ECS: the everyday range

Not every Foursquare is allocation-only. The Doorly's range (3, 12 and 14 Year, plus cask finishes) and R.L. Seale's 10 deliver the same craft at everyday prices, and they are some of the best value in rum. The Real McCoy is made entirely at Foursquare too.

Most popular vs highest rated

The most-reviewed Foursquare bottles on RumX are the accessible Doorly's 12 and 14. The highest community scores, though, go to the cask-strength single blends: Destino, Absolutio and the ECS line all sit near the top of the database.
