Velier Isautier Small Batch 2007
Velier Isautier Small Batch 2007Apricot-and-spice Reunion rum, minty oaky finish
Isautier has been in the same family since 1845, six generations of it, which makes it the oldest rum house on Réunion. On RumX the name splits in two: fruity arrangés off the supermarket shelf, and cask-strength vintages that cost ten times as much. Know only the first half and you do not know the distillery.

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

RumX’s 0–10 scale is strict: 8.1 sits in the “Very good” band. 80% of tasters rate it Good or better; only 3% rate it below average. See the full rating guide →
RumX holds more than 90 Isautier bottles with over 1,200 community ratings, and they do not belong in the same cabinet. Four in ten entries are arrangés, punchs or cream liqueurs: fruit-flavoured spirits that we label as a spirit drink rather than as rum, because that is what EU rules make them. The Arrangé Banane Flambée sits there at 7.0/10, the Douceur d'Arrangé Cahouète at 17 percent at 5.5/10.
The other half is rum, and there it gets serious. Thirty bottlings come into the glass at 50 percent or more, the strongest at 79.5. If you only know Isautier from the travel-retail shelf, you have never seen the part of the distillery collectors pay three figures for.
La Réunion is known as an island of molasses-based rhum traditionnel, and most houses here do exactly that. Isautier runs both roads: our database holds almost as many Isautier bottles from fresh cane juice as from molasses. The cane grows on the volcanic soil of a geologically young island, in a tropical climate and in the wind of the Indian Ocean, and the house names that terroir after something you rarely read on a rum label: embruns marins, sea spray, which it writes into the flavour profile of its rhums vieux. The white agricole comes off freshly pressed cane, distilled slowly over six hours on the column, and leaves the still between 69 and 74 percent with the frangipane and pastry notes the house calls its signature.
That both work side by side is something Velier turned into a controlled comparison: two casks from the same 2005 vintage, sixteen years old, both bottled at 65 percent, one from cane juice, one from molasses. The community scores the Hors d'âge Agricole and the Hors d'âge Traditionnel identically at 8.7/10. Here the raw material decides the character, not the quality.
Isautier distils on columns and sets the most promising batches aside white before they ever see wood. The rhum vieux then matures for at least three years: first six to fourteen months in new French oak, which does the colour and the aromatic lift, then several years in what the house calls fûts roux, casks that have already held Isautier rum and give the spirit oxygen and roundness instead of more wood. The ratio between the two shifts with every year of ageing, and cold filtration follows. Cellar master Marie Ferrand runs that programme. Ageing happens on La Réunion, not in Europe, so the tropical climate pulls flavour out of the wood far faster than a cool warehouse would, at the price of a much higher angel's share. A thirteen-year-old from here is not a thirteen-year-old from Scotland.
You can read the result in the community's tasting notes. Woody, vanilla and caramel lead both on the nose and on the palate, followed by citrus and spice. What does not turn up is sugar: every Isautier entry we have a sugar measurement for comes back unsweetened, not one of them sweetened. For a house with that much sweetness on the arrangé shelf, the core is remarkably dry. If that is what you are after, start from our unsweetened rums.
Louis Isautier came from mainland France to Réunion in 1832, aged 23, and his brother Charles Isautier followed two years later. In 1845 the two founded the family company that still carries their name: the oldest rhumerie on the island and, by the family's own account, the oldest company still trading there at all. After Charles died, his widow Antoinette took over in 1865 and built the export business, and in 1910 Alfred Isautier introduced the triangular bottle that remains the brand's calling card.
Those names are not museum pieces. The house's collector series carries them on the label. The Antoinette 14 Ans at 8.3/10 is the most-reviewed bottling Isautier has ever released under its own name, and for the 180th anniversary in 2025 came the Cuvée Anniversaire 180 Ans at 65.4 percent and 8.5/10. If you want to see the history on site, the Saga du Rhum museum has stood on the Domaine Isautier in Saint-Pierre since 2008.
Rum arrangé is La Réunion's own creole method: white rum, fruit, spices and bark, left to stand for weeks. Isautier sold its first arrangé, the Gingerlick, in the 1970s and has since built the category into a shelf of its own, from banane flambée through café vanille to goyavier ananas piment. The punchs at 18 percent, the Arhumatik liqueurs and the Douceurs at 17 percent belong to the same family.
In the community scores, though, none of it substitutes for rum. The three most-reviewed arrangés land at 6.9 and 7.0/10, the cream liqueurs below that. They are built to work chilled, over ice or in a cocktail, and there they do work. If you want to get to know the distillery, the arrangé is the wrong way in. If you want something to bring back from Saint-Pierre, it is the right one.
The most-reviewed Isautier bottle on RumX does not come from Isautier at all. The Velier Isautier Small Batch 2007 sits at 8.5/10, and it is independent bottlers who built the distillery's reputation among collectors. Velier has bottled six Isautier casks, with single casks from Swell de Spirits and Le Gus't alongside them.
At the very top are the two 2005 Hors d'âge. From the house's own shelf, the vintage series come closest: Antoinette, Apollonie, Audacieux and Aventurier land between 8.0 and 8.4/10, nearly all at 55 to 58 percent, a few as brut de fût beyond 70. The gap to the standard range is wide, and the reason is simple: cask strength instead of 40 percent, one vintage instead of a blend.
The cheapest serious way in is the white one. The Rhum Blanc Traditionnel at 49 percent is no sipper at 6.6/10, but it is the base La Réunion builds its cocktails and its arrangés on. If you want to start with something aged, take the 7 Ans d'Âge: named Meilleur Spiritueux du Monde at the 2015 Spirits Selection, and filed by the community at a sober 7.3/10. The 10 Ans d'Âge sits just above it at 7.4/10.
The real jump comes after that. From the Antoinette level upwards you are looking at cask strength, a stated vintage and three-figure prices, and that is exactly where the scores climb by more than a full point. If the island style grabs you, the next step is Savanna and its Grand Arôme, or the wider view of agricole rums.
