MHOBA is a single estate rum distillery in Mpumalanga, South Africa, founded by Robert Greaves, who built much of his own equipment — including hand-hammered copper pot stills — to distill from fresh sugarcane juice grown on-site. That do-it-yourself, farm-to-bottle setup put South Africa on the rum map, and collaborations with Velier and Habitation Velier pushed the name into serious collector territory.

Across 2,454 community reviews, MHOBA holds a median of 8.2/10 — strong for a producer whose style splits opinion. The house profile leans hard into esters: nail polish, glue, solvent and overripe tropical fruit, often compared to high-ester Jamaican rum or Haitian clairin. Drinkers describe it as challenging, atypical and not a beginner pour, but many find real depth once it opens.

The MHOBA lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.
