Neisson

Neisson is the smallest distillery on Martinique, making under 2 percent of the island's rum, and one of only two still in family hands. Run today by Claudine Vernant Neisson and her son Gregory, it distils on a 1952 all-copper Savalle still, ferments with its own native yeast, and makes what many call the island's finest white rhum. The community rates its aged bottlings among the very best agricole there is.

The RumX Guide to Neisson

Small, family-run, since 1931

The Neisson family began growing cane at Le Carbet, on the west coast north of Fort-de-France, in 1922, and founder Hildevert-Pamphille Neisson started distilling in 1931. It has run continuously ever since, through the Second World War. Alongside La Favorite, it is one of only two family-owned distilleries left on Martinique, and it accounts for under 2 percent of the island's output.

The doctor who saved the distillery

When Jean Neisson died there was no male heir of age to take over: his grandson Gregory Vernant, though already steeped in rum-making at 15, was too young to even drink. So Jean's daughter Claudine Vernant Neisson, a trained hospital doctor, stepped in as master distiller while Gregory finished his studies. Thirty years on, mother and son still run the distillery together, a rare continuity in an industry full of buy-outs.

Native yeast and an all-copper still

Over a three-year study with the lab SOFRLAB, Neisson screened 200 yeast cultures from its own cane plots down to two native strains, the first time in a long while a Martinique distiller has used native yeast. They are less efficient, stretching fermentation to as much as five days, but the extra time builds complex aldehydes and esters, the building blocks of fruit. Distillation runs on a 1952 Savalle still, the only all-copper still on the island, painstakingly taken apart and cleaned once a year.

Five whites and the bold L'Esprit

Neisson bottles five different white rhums at four strengths, from 50 up to 70 percent, to show how cane variety and terroir shift the spirit. The 52.5 percent uses only Thiebert Carbet blue cane grown beside the distillery; L'Esprit is run off the same canes at an uncut 70 percent, the strongest French agricole you can find. Aged Vieux rums rest at least four years, a full year over the legal minimum, mostly in ex-bourbon with some French oak.

What the RumX community drinks

Neisson punches far above its size on RumX. The Velier Neisson 70th Anniversary is one of the most reviewed and highest-rated Martinique rums on the platform at 9.0/10, and the distillery's own 12, 15 and 19 year olds all score in the nines. The white Blanc, wild and fruity at 50 percent, is the everyday starting point and a Ti Punch classic.
