Rhum J.M

Rhum J.M is Martinique's oldest surviving distillery, tucked into a lush volcanic valley in Macouba on the northern slopes of Mount Pelee. It is the only producer on the island that makes its rum entirely from its own cane, milled within an hour of cutting, and its brown-sugar signature has made J.M one of the most beloved agricole names with collectors.

The RumX Guide to Rhum J.M

The initials that became a brand

The estate began as two neighbouring properties, Bellevue and Fonds-Preville, in Macouba. In 1845 Jean-Marie Martin bought it, installed stills, and marked his barrels with his initials J.M, which became the brand. The 1902 eruption blasted westward, away from the valley, so the distillery survived largely intact while Saint-Pierre burned. The name Rhum J.M was registered as a trademark in 1938.

Cut your own, mill within the hour

J.M is the only Martinique producer that makes its rhum entirely from cane it grows itself, rotating about 200 hectares of cane and bananas between its Bellevue and Preville estates. Master distiller Nazaire Canatous, 45 years at J.M, challenges his team to mill the cane within a single hour of cutting. That freshness, plus a year in new American oak before ex-bourbon, is the source of the house's vanilla-and-brown-sugar profile.

GBH, Spiribam and the Edden Project

In 2002 Groupe Bernard Hayot (GBH) bought Fonds-Preville and the J.M brand, adding it to Rhum Clement under its Spiribam arm. Until recently J.M also distilled Clement. In 2022 it launched the Edden Project, a push to become one of the world's most sustainable distilleries: all bagasse and vinasse reused, 20 million litres of water saved, and a 90 percent cut in furnace emissions since 2017.

Mount Pelee water, single column

Volcanic spring water from high on Mount Pelee feeds both the milling and the bottling. Fermentation runs just 24 to 30 hours in nearly two dozen open vats, and the cane wine is distilled on a single copper column, the larger built in 2015 on an Armagnac model, to about 72 percent. White rhum rests six full months in steel before bottling, longer than most houses, which J.M reads as confidence in its spirit.

What the RumX community drinks

The community gravitates to J.M's aged vintages. The J.M La Dame Jeanne and the J.M 2003 15yr both sit at the top of the house's RumX ratings, and independent bottlings like the Wu Dram Clan 2015 push even higher. The VSOP and 10 Year Old are the gateway: cappuccino, brazil nut and that waxy honey note that marks the distillery.
