Saint James, explained

What kind of rum is Saint-James?

Saint-James is rhum agricole from Martinique, distilled from fresh cane juice, and its range runs from five white expressions to many double-digit-age rhums. The distillery is well armed: six creole columns plus two modern columns process up to a tonne of cane a minute during harvest, with column distillate around 73 percent, and a batch still makes its Coeur de Chauffe. It uses some molasses in partnership with Le Galion, and rum-making is overseen by Marc Sassier, president of the producers' association that defends the Martinique AOC.

New rum goes into ex-bourbon and French-oak casks at between 55 and 68 percent, and a 2021 visit report counted around 16,300 of them. Unlike Depaz, Saint-James does not consolidate same-age casks to slow the angel's share. Because it releases so widely, from cane-juice agricole to indie single casks, there is a long ladder to climb, up to old bottlings such as the 20 year old Saint James Les Ephemeres N1, which the RumX community tags woody with dried fruit and nutmeg, and the J. Bally Millesime 1999.

Where is Saint-James made?

Saint-James is made in Sainte-Marie on Martinique's northeast Atlantic coast, where production moved permanently in 1974. The original distillery near Saint-Pierre was partly destroyed by the 1902 eruption and was producing again from 1905, and a new distillery was built in 1929. Today the site has two museums, one of them described as probably the best distillation museum in the world, alongside a working cooperage.

Why does Saint-James have an English name?

To sell rum into New England: in the house's own telling, a learned monk, Pere Lefebure, set up a sugar factory and rum distillery near Saint-Pierre in 1765 and, because France banned rum imports, gave it an English-sounding name. The brand itself was registered in 1882, when the Marseille trader Paulin Lambert protected the name.

La Martiniquaise (COFEPP) has owned Saint-James since 2003, the same group that owns Depaz and the Dillon brand. Before that, after a bankruptcy in 1958, the brand passed through Picon and Cointreau.

Because it saved shipping space and cut breakage: Paulin Lambert introduced and trademarked the squat square bottle in 1882. A court later ruled the shape was part of the brand’s identity, and Saint-James used it decades before Johnnie Walker or Cointreau made the shape famous.

A pot-distilled rhum from fresh cane juice, bottled at 60 percent, and one of the few pot-distilled cane-juice rhums on Martinique alongside those of A1710 and HBS. Because it is distilled below the AOC’s 65 percent rule, it sits outside the appellation and cannot be classified as AOC Martinique rhum agricole.

A heritage Martinique brand that the Saint-James distillery has made alongside its own since 1996, including old millésimes such as the 1999. The RumX community tags that bottle woody, with cocoa, coffee, leather and tobacco.
