Grand Arôme and HERR high-ester marks from the Indian Ocean
Savanna sits in Bois Rouge in the north of Réunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, and runs on sugarcane the way a lot of the island does — but its reputation among drinkers comes from the heavy stuff. Alongside a lighter Traditionnel molasses line and some agricole work, the distillery pushes fermentation hard to make high-ester rums under the Grand Arôme, Lontan and HERR labels, the last of which reaches ester counts that put it in Jamaican funk-bomb territory.
