T.D.L

Angostura is famous for a bottle most people never drink neat. The bitters house founded in 1824 became Trinidad's only rum distillery, and its arm Trinidad Distillers makes a clean, column-distilled, Spanish-style rum unlike the heavy funk of Jamaica or Guyana. The same plant still guards the secret recipe for the world's most famous cocktail bitters.

  • Unmistakable menthol-mint house profile
  • Caroni-like funk in older casks
  • Strong independent single-cask releases

The T.D.L lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

The RumX Guide to T.D.L

The bitters house that became a distillery

Angostura bitters began in 1824 as a medical tincture by the German doctor Johann Siegert in Venezuela, moving to Trinidad in 1875. For decades the company simply bought rum to make bitters, until it bought so much that building its own distillery made sense. That distillery, Trinidad Distillers, opened around 1949 and is now the island's only rum maker.

A Spanish-style column rum

Because the distillery was built to feed bitters, there was never a reason for heavy pot-still rum. TDL went column from day one, making it the rare English-speaking island with a continental, Spanish-heritage style. Its German-built Gebr. Herrmann columns make a heavy rum off the stripping column alone and a near-neutral light rum off all five columns, then marry them. Molasses is imported, since Trinidad's last sugar factory closed in 2007.

The Angostura range and local brands

The aged Angostura range runs from the 1919 (built on the old Fernandes vintage rum) up through the 7 Year and the extra-aged 1824. Yet the brand-name Angostura rum is only a sliver of output: most is local stuff like Forres Park, White Oak and Royal Oak that stays in Trinidad, plus large volumes of bulk rum for blenders worldwide.

The secret bitters room

Angostura aromatic bitters is a rum infusion, made in a single room of huge tanks. The botanicals, things like orange peel, gentian, cassia and cinnamon, arrive in colour-coded bags that even staff cannot identify, are milled beyond recognition, and steep in rum for hours. Trinidad customs does not inspect the shipments, the recipe is guarded like Coca-Cola, and the result is bottled at 44.7 percent. Around 3.5 million bottles leave each year.

Most popular vs highest rated

On RumX the Angostura range is the accessible core, easy to find and reliable. The higher scores go to aged single-distillery Trinidad rum bottled by independents like Swell de Spirits and Spirit Gallery, which reach around 9/10. It is a gentler, cleaner profile than the island's other legend, the closed Caroni, but from the same Trinidad column tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions about T.D.L

Both. Its distillery, Trinidad Distillers (TDL), is the only rum distillery in Trinidad, and the same company makes the world-famous Angostura aromatic bitters at the same site.

Trinidad Distillers Ltd, the Angostura distillery built around 1949. It is the only rum distillery left in Trinidad and one of the largest in the Caribbean.

Column only. TDL has never used pot stills, making a cleaner, Spanish-heritage style that is unusual among the English-speaking Caribbean islands.

The 1919 is the signature and the most popular on RumX, with the extra-aged 1824 and the 7 Year close behind. Aged independent bottlings of Trinidad rum score a little higher for enthusiasts.

Yes. It is a rum-based infusion of secret botanicals, steeped and then blended with sugar and caramel before being bottled at 44.7 percent. The full recipe is one of the best-kept secrets in drinks.
