The estate where the stills gathered

Before Diamond became the home of Guyana's historic stills, that role belonged to Uitvlugt, 17 km west of Georgetown. As distilleries closed, their stills were brought here: the Port Mourant wooden vats arrived in 1968, and the Versailles still and Enmore wooden Coffey followed in 1994. Uitvlugt's own French Savalle column, installed in 1921, joined them on the final move to Diamond in 2000.

A ghost stillhouse, a working warehouse

When Uitvlugt stopped distilling in 1999, getting the rum flowing at Diamond mattered more than the building, so crews knocked out the walls to drag the big stills out. What remains is a post-apocalyptic jumble of rusting tanks and pipes. The aging warehouses survived, though, and DDL still uses them as deep storage for casks it will not touch for years. The GuySuCo sugar factory next door is also still running.

ICBU and the French Savalle still

Uitvlugt's own rum runs under the marque ICBU, made on the four-column French Savalle still that now lives at Diamond and recreates Uitvlugt's marks there. It is a versatile column, giving everything from light to medium-bodied rum, very different from the heavy wooden-still marks it once stood beside. The initials ICBU trace back to a Dutch-era estate owner, though the exact name is disputed.

How to read an Uitvlugt bottle

Because so many stills passed through Uitvlugt, a bottle labelled Uitvlugt is not always pure ICBU: the mark code tells the real story, and some of the most famous Uitvlugt bottlings are actually Port Mourant rum distilled here. The single-mark bottlings collectors hunt come almost entirely from independents, with Velier the most prolific. The Velier Uitvlugt ULR 1997 is one of the most reviewed.

Uitvlugt is almost entirely a collector's distillery on RumX: more than 170 bottles, and very few from DDL itself. The ceiling is extraordinary.
