The West Indies Rum Distillery, WIRD for short, is the biggest rum distillery in Barbados, on Brighton Beach just north of Bridgetown, and it makes an estimated 80 to 85 percent of all Barbados rum. With a capacity of at least 15 million litres of pure alcohol a year, it makes far more than Mount Gay or Foursquare.

Its lead goes back to the start. It brought column distillation to Barbados, and by 1896 it was making three times as much rum as all other Barbados distilleries combined.

Rockley style is a collector's name for a prized, aged WIRD style with honey and smoke, named after an old still. Rum labelled Rockley did not run through that still, though: it came from the Vulcan chamber still and the Gregg's Farm pot.

You meet it on aged, independently bottled rum rather than on the distillery's own labels, and the celebrated 1986 vintage shows why collectors chase it: the RumX community finds honey, smoke, spice and tropical fruit like mango in it. That is what WIRD's rum can become after two or three decades in oak.

Mainly Planteray (formerly Plantation) and Stade's, because WIRD rarely sells under its own name. It supplied Malibu for decades and once made Cockspur, and it blends and bottles under contract for brands around the world. If you have drunk Barbados rum without knowing the distillery, the odds are good it started here.

One of the most varied still collections in rum: columns from several decades, pot stills and a rare chamber still. The columns are a four-column John Dore still from the 1970s, a single Stone & Webster column from 1995 and a vacuum column added in 2021. Alongside them sit pot stills, the small Gregg's Farm and the newer Hot Pot, plus the rare Vulcan, according to the distillery the last working chamber still of its kind. The old Rockley pot still, last used in the 1960s, was restored in France and came back in 2023.

More of the rum now ages on the island instead of being shipped out as bulk. Since the takeover the distillery has also reawakened the Vulcan still, built the hand-hammered Hot Pot, started a wild-yeast nursery, run seawater-mash experiments and, in 2022, opened the Harper cane mill to crush estate cane.
