Worthy Park

Worthy Park is Jamaica's true cane-to-glass estate. Its land was granted in 1670, it runs the island's oldest and most efficient sugar factory, and it makes rum from molasses it produces itself. After falling silent in 1962, the distillery was rebuilt from scratch in 2005 and now bottles some of the most respected modern estate rum in the Caribbean.

The Worthy Park lineup compared

Which bottling is the better one is decided neither by price nor by the age on the label. Here they stand side by side, sorted by the community's median rating. The number of ratings sits next to it: a high score from few voices says less than a middling one from many.

The RumX Guide to Worthy Park

Patented in 1670, silent in 1962

A red sign at the gate reads Vale of Lluidas Vale, patented November 28th, 1670, the year the estate was granted to an officer from the 1655 conquest. Sugar followed in the 1720s, the first record of rum in 1741. The Clarke family has run it since 1918, but in 1962 an oversupply deal with the Jamaican Rum Pool put a cork in two centuries of distilling. The sugar mill kept running; the still went quiet.

Rebuilt cane-to-glass

In the mid-2000s, managing director Gordon Clarke saw the rum revival coming and built a brand-new distillery rather than revive the old one. Bulk rum flowed from 2005, the everyday Rum Bar brand arrived in 2007, and the acclaimed Worthy Park Estate range followed in 2017. The estate is fully self-supplied: molasses from its own factory is pumped underground to the still, and the dunder goes back to the cane fields as fertiliser.

One pot still, two ferments

Worthy Park leans on a single Forsyths double-retort pot still, wood-panelled and arguably the handsomest in Jamaica. It runs a light fermentation in steel and a heavy one in white-oak vats fed with molasses, cane juice and crushed cane stalks. The result is at least eight marques, led by WPM, topping out around 800 esters. It is real funk, but cleaner and more polished than the extremes of Hampden.

The brands and the bulk

Two house brands carry the estate: the aged Worthy Park Estate range and the everyday Rum Bar, including a 63 percent white overproof. Most sales stay on the local market, but Worthy Park is also a respected bulk supplier, its rum turning up in Bacardi's Single Cane Estate range, in The Duppy's Share, and through brokers like Main Rum and Hamilton. It is run as a smart, modern business with a full lab.

Most popular vs highest rated

Worthy Park stands out among Jamaica's bulk-leaning houses because its own releases score well on RumX, not just the independent bottlings. The Single Estate 2006 sits around 8.5/10, right alongside Habitation Velier Worthy Park bottlings near 8.6/10. Across more than 350 bottles the scores are strikingly consistent, which is exactly what you would expect from this clean, modern, self-supplied estate.
