Guyana fans who want the dark, molasses-heavy Diamond profile will feel right at home here. This 1996 MDS pours coffee, dark chocolate, dried plum and orange peel, with a woody, roasted backbone. Several tasters loved the "fruits with chocolate" but flagged a thin spot mid-palate — the extra ABV over its sister bottlings helps, though a bit more body would have sealed it.

Little random 96 Diamond cross tasting. For the colored contenders I‘m looking at the RDL Collectors Series No. 2 (MDS) and the The Taste of Rum bottling (SVC). On the nose the impact of the coloring is very noticeable. Burnt sugar, caramel as well as coffee notes alongside dried fruits are present in both bottlings. However, the ToR bottling provides a better balance and way more complexity/depth on the nose. RDL is more straight forward delivering intense notes but cannot quite match in terms of compexity. On the palate, RDL delivers nicely on heavy roasted, chocolate and coffee notes with bold dried fruits. Very nice. The ToR bottling, however, is still some notches ahead. Very well balanced and rich Demerara profile presenting a top notch column bottling. The low ABV doesn’t hurt the experience at all as the rum delivers a surprising high intensity in the palate. This is very good indeed.

Franconian Tasting Gang on 23.11.24 at Jarek. Very tasty, but I have to denounce the fact that there are two different bottlings with exactly the same label and the same name. Very difficult to classify this rum at first. That should be better Romdeluxe 😅 Otherwise a really cool piece.

In my opinion, the few percent more alcohol compared to the sister bottlings from Corman and Romdeluxe have a very positive effect here - the heavy sweetness is much better integrated and is far less dominant than in the other two bottlings. I like it best of this trio, even if the aromatic spectrum of this profile is largely focused on the classic notes: Caramel sweetness, café au lait, chocolate, subtle spices and some tobacco. In direct comparison with its big brothers from Velier, the aromatic depth is lacking, which is certainly also due to the significantly lower alcohol content; in my opinion, the sweetness is also a little too dominant and leaves too little room for the fresher spicy notes in particular to fully develop. Nevertheless, this bottling is fun and offers a rum of a high quality level.

Nice Guyana Sipper ... delicious on the palate and nose. It probably needs a little longer on the palate ... and standing time is also good for it. The price/performance ratio is definitely ok and it's a good drink. A relaxed Diamond that's good to take with you.

Franconian Tasting Gang - 23.11.2024: Initially dark chocolate, coffee, sweetness on the nose, followed by fruit, plum and orange peel. A little surprisingly thin on the palate at first, but then the rum kicks in. Dark again, with chocolate, coffee and molasses. Wood and again plum and orange in the background. Heavy, dark finish. Actually quite tasty. Small point deduction because of the short emptiness on the palate.

Another great release from Romdeluxe living up to its name. The nose is woody and fruity with some chocolate. The chocolate really comes out in the empty glass once rested. The palate is woody and has roasted notes to it with dried fruit, chocolate, honey and a nice hint of coffee. The finish is long and woody with honey, chocolate and coffee. Price to quality can be discussed, but it is a very nice rum.

This one is really fun! Typical molasses Diamond from the 1996 vintage. Fortunately, compared to other bottlings, the alcohol content is not chosen too low!

The nose is already somewhat reminiscent of the NY94 profile, although there is still a nice coffee note here. Very inviting overall! The taste is then quite round with coffee, dried fruit, spices and chocolate. From memory, very similar to the El Dorado DHE/LBI.

Just the color of it tells you you're in another world. The nose is greedy, with chocolate, vanilla, orange and plums, spiced up by the old barrel and hints of shoe polish. On the palate, the structure remains the same: vanilla, chocolate cream, coffee, orange, plum... and the cask and polish are more present than on the nose, without diminishing the extreme delicacy of this juice. The finish is long on vanilla, barrel and shoe polish. Long after finishing this tasting, I had an impression of menthol too. One of the best rums I've ever tasted.
