Foursquare ECS XVII 2009
Here's the surprise: at a full 60%, the alcohol mostly stays out of your way. Expect classic Foursquare — coconut, vanilla, oak, dark chocolate and a whiff of glue/solvent, with warm baking spice and dried fruit underneath. Several tasters find it a touch spicier and drier than the 2008, some even a bit harsh. But it's balanced, full-bodied and, for many, a real daily-driver bottle.

Ocas tastes like soap... Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It's a rum especially appreciated by rum lovers who are fed up with sugar and are looking for a gentle, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Simply pleasant and not aggressive flavors.

22.10.2025 Retasting while listening to some nice Trance Tracks. ------------------ Another wonderful Exceptional Cask that I received a few of yesterday. This one was so god I had a double dip :-) Price to quality is extremely good and I will order more backup bottles. Complex and well balanced and a true foursquare from nose to finish. Having a go at this one again and the fruityness is very nice.

The bottle fell sometime last year. Now I'm tasting a spare sample. Every vintage is hilarious and this one is no exception. On the nose, coconut, bourbon, dried fruit, perhaps praline, and a bit of technicality impress. The taste is quite sweet, but probably because of that, quite drinkable 😀 . On the palate, I'm intrigued by the notes of coconut, cocoa and some earthiness.

A really really good Foursquare and with the big advantage of not being too rare so it’s easier to get hold of. I could still not help myself and bought 4 bottles, just to be able to have it as my daily goto rum, yummy 😋😋😋 - I might have forgot how many bottles I’ve now bought, but it might be closer to 10. Unfortunately this bottle starts to be a bit expensive for a daily driver 😆 - Dayliy goto and still outstanding. - Still my goto rum and it is a really good one. - 250912: Well, this one is too close now as it’s been my daily driver for several years. Today this my new botte opening number 10 or so 😆

Solid Foursquare - brings everything you'd expect from the standard range and is perhaps a tad more approachable than its predecessors. The tart spicy notes remain present, however, and the rest of the profile is paradetypical as well. So one should not expect big surprises.
Review by Tim
Very similar to the 2008, which is a good thing. Caramel, vanilla, fruits (coconut!), a bit roasted, leather and a little chocolate. Just not quite as round and intense, nicely dry, present wood, bourbon and spicy sharp. Still a very good rum from Foursquare, widely available at a good price.
Review by cigares
A beautiful ester-like varnish with tropical fruit on the first nose, the fruit immediately enters the game. Depth and complexity. Energy and dynamism. Surprisingly smooth on the palate, with fine aromatic development. Tropical fruit, citrus and vanilla on the finish. Another very good Foursquare, deep, dynamic and balanced. In direct comparison with the Diadem, it's more complex and dynamic, thanks to a hint of esters.

Nothing extraordinary, but good Foursquare!
Review by Oliver
Very good Foursquare, which brings everything you expect. Quite spicy and peppery (in a positive sense) on the palate, plus tropical fruits and some glue. Great rum from Barbados!
Review by DomM
Somewhat more spicy and peppery in the snide vs its peers from other vintages.
Review by Marcel.
Berries, Rasberry, sweet, acidic, gentle spice vanilla, chocolate, lots of tobacco, a bit of tar, some oak. The finish is long with oak, tobacco and copper. This Foursquare with its bright acidic note really hits the spot for me.
Review by Benoit Mahe
A gourmet and spicy Foursquare. Very well balanced. Always a good value.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
On the first try I like it better than the 2008 (I found that one a bit unbalanced and too alcoholic compared to '05 and '07). It is definitely more wood/oak/bourbon driven. Warm, thick and oily. Spices. Sandal wood. A good balance between sweet and dry. Coffee and Cocoa beans. Very pleasant.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Times something different than its predecessors 2005, 2007 and 2008. like it very much. Very good Foursquare.
Review by Jack M
Charred oak and spices come through very strong.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A particularly successful Foursquare. The nose offers a nice balance between dried and tropical fruits, wood, chocolate, caramel, spices, solvent and glue. In the mouth, we find an intense and complex framework, with a powerful attack on woody and spicy notes, accompanied by greediness with chocolate, caramel and coconut. Roasted notes are also felt. The finish is warm and equally expressive with notes of tobacco and cocoa to support, the caramel finishing with sweetness. A greedy, complex and very high quality Foursquare.
Review by Joachim Guger
Classic Foursquare with bourbon aging.A slight chemical undertone that the others do not have and make this vintage interesting. Creamy with water cookie dough. Perfectly integrated alcohol, round balanced but not very complex. (That's what the 2004 does best.)Otherwise nothing new under the sun. A great sipper at a bargain price.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Just as delicious as the 2008.

very good Foursquare! Finally again with good PLV ...👍

Maybe I'm fed up with the ECS line from Foursquare, I find all the products really similar and without any truly valid new taste. The magic of the first releases has given way to a flattening that I hope can be the start of something new.
Review by Beancheese
Tried alongside Foursquare ECS Covenant XXIII. Both are similar and what you would expect from a Foursquare release. By comparison this one is sweeter on the nose but more intense on the palate. Nose was sweet with a toffee quality, vanilla, spice and oak. Little bit of glue both in the aroma and palate. This one has some intensity and a longer finish. Good stuff, assuming you like Foursquare style.

Realy good as usual for a foursquare
Review by Frank
For me, Foursquare unfortunately always equals Foursquare, fine nuances distinguish them, sure; and they are of good quality too. But if you know one, you know them all. Sorry, it’s never been different for me. Nose: Passion fruit, coconut, caramel, and vanilla. At first slightly sharp, now it’s getting finer, a slight, pleasant apple cider vinegar note and lemon come in. The sweet caramel dominates. Overall, a typically good Foursquare. 8.0 Palate: tropical fruits with coconut and papaya, but here immediately a slightly soapy, bacon-like texture appears. Interesting. It leans towards violet. That’s unexpected and therefore good. Oh my God, I like quirky stuff. 8.6

Very good, as usual from foursquare. I preferred the 2008, though.
Review by zabo
I think this is still one of the best in the ECS series. At that time the price was still fair. A beautiful Foursquare representative. For me, it's also a great mixer, both in the PinaColade and the CubaLibre.
Review by Morgan Garet
A classic, ultra-efficient FS in the tradition of its predecessors.

Awesome!!! I discovered Foursquare with the 2007, so I went to find the last 2009 vintage. I love this Foursquare, superb rum with a lot of vanilla, coconut and a tobacco finish. Happy to have a bottle on my bar! ❤️🇧🇧
Review by RumTaTa
Great similarity with the Doorlys 14yo just tasted. Here, however, more intensity and smoother in relation to the higher alcohol content. The finish in particular is more intense and lasts longer.
Review by Michal S
A very solid rum, classic Foursquare profile (wood, vanilla, dried fruit, coconut), a bit harsher in taste than its predecessors.
Review by Thunderbird
I like it better than the Shibboleth, more flavorful and fuller
Review by mto75
Tasted the 2009 together with the 2008, both with identical 'performance data', therefore also with a very similar profile. On the nose, the bourbon oak barrel notes come through nicely in both, without being too intrusive. However, I find the alcohol a little more pungent in the 2008. The 2009 is somewhat rounder and more 'caramelly' here. On the palate, however, there is no difference.
Review by w00tAN
Great piece from Foursquare. On the nose nice fruit, light sweetness and spice but also a bit of solvent. In the mouth nice natural sweetness with chocolate notes, which is replaced by a nice complex spiciness. Great wood notes complete the whole. Medium finish, super integrated alcohol.
Review by DosenZorn
Great Foursquare showing all typical aromas. No fuss, no fancy unnecessary finishes. Simply Foursquare essence with plenty of power and cask influence. Despite the simplicity a great rum.
Review by JFehr
Wood and coconut. Somewhat unspectacular
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Really nice foursquare. Great, intensely fruity and powerful nose, then an explosion of caramelized banana, grilled pineapple, dark chocolate with a little chilli and beautiful barrel notes. This is fun! Not too powerful and yet beautifully palatable and complex 🤤

Who gave this one a 90 score?
Review by Righrum
The usual, solid vintage from ECS series. Coconut, wood, caramel and dried fruits, accompanied with spices, are the main traits both on the nose and drink side. The alcohol is maybe a bit too much noticeable compared to some other ECS but price/quality ratio is really high
Review by Werner10
So much better than the 2010 version imo. Also 60% abv as the 2010 but easier to drink. Maybe a bit sweeter in taste as well. I like it 👌
Review by HenryL
Fruity-vanilla on the nose with a slight adhesive note Pleasant chocolate note in the taste Compared to last year, this is somewhat rounder, but less exciting

Big Foursquare tasting, part II (30.09.2026)
Review by Henry Davies
It’s a super solid rum, bourbon cask which comes through in spades. To me it’s not as refined and well balanced as the 2008 but standalone still a great rum. Nose is leather and oak and the mouth is a little bit too much on the wood, leather, earth and dark chocolate side. Finish is medium length and dry with roasted notes and tobacco and light spice which keeps goes. One which carries itself in the glass well and keeps you coming back for more. Not the best of the ECS bourbon series to my tastes but still a top rum
Review by Martin Spooner
Today in direct comparison to the 2008. Great nose, balanced and fruity. The taste is wonderful. However, for my palate a bit sharper than the 2008. A nicely balanced rum. One of my favorites. But I would prefer the 2008. Top today also as a mixer :-)
Review by Santo
The alcohol is a bit too present, a shame. But still very good nonetheless.
Review by Jakob Mmmmhhh
Great Foursquare, classic profile with more fruit than 2008, but also a tick less body and glue, and the alcohol perhaps not at the level of the 2008. Still a great rum!
Review by Serge
Solid ... but not outstanding. I think I liked the Redoutable best from this sample set (2008, 2009, shibolet, Redoutable)
Review by Portman
Lots of vanilla, a little wood, just the right sweetness. A little marzipan and raisins. Typical ECS: great!
Review by Jan Riha
Super rum even in spite of the heat as a red rule. Long spicy finish and very complex flavour
Review by TheCelticRumFan
Nose: Toffee, acetone, maple syrup, dried fruits like dates and apricots, leather Mouth: Strawberry jam, coffee, honey, slightly medicinal, black pepper, cumin seed Finish: Flavour dissipates quite fast but the heat maintains for a medium finish The aroma is quite pleasant and while the palate is initially enjoyable, it dwindles quite quickly and I'm left with mainly a fading heat. Mildly disappointing, but still a nice drop. It's a good bottle but it's not up there with the other Foursquare offerings I have had.
