One taster called it "a solid dirty Caroni," and that sums it up. Rubber, tar, tobacco and wet wood up front, with just enough caramel and dried plum to keep the dirty side from turning harsh. At 65.8% the heat is real but mostly well-tucked, and it warms you from deep inside. A continental-aged bottling that leans dry and tarry rather than fruity-sweet.

Compared to Bellamy's and Colors of Rum Caroni 1998, this is much drier and dirtier. The fruits are side effects. Surprisingly, the finish is surprisingly berry and fruity. The alcohol is unfortunately moderately integrated. A solid, dirty Caroni.

I just secured my VIP ticket for the German Rum Festival 2022 in Berlin so I opened this sample. Pretty good and at release the price matched the quality. Slightly lighter on the Caroni notes than the heavy ones, but still pretty good. The nose has dried fruit, rubber and tar right off the bat followed by roasted wood, leather and a nice tobacco note. The palate is intense and complex yet well balanced with dried fruit, rubber and tar trailed by robacco and light caramel. The finish is long, intense and warm with tobacco and light nuttyness.

Typical Caroni with characteristic tar/rubber nose. Overall toasty/smoky, fruity, but most importantly, a good load of caramel/toffee or even milk chocolate. Without that, I would find the profile too "difficult." On the palate and finish, not quite as much fruit, but still caramel.

On aeration, citrus fruits, berries and plums arise, molasses is vegetal with chesnuts, perhaps slightly perfumed, sweet with honey hints, the wood is spicy with cinnamon, warm, smoky, roasted nuts join. 9:On the palate, the attack is heavy, intense with industrial notes like tar and rubber, medicinal with varnish hints, menthol, dirty, oily, later metallic, chemical, fruity with candied fruits, coconut hints, mango, berries, citrus fruits, slightly fermented, dairy hints join, the oak is roasted with toffee, caramel, cocoa, leather, spicy with cinnamon, sweet, salty and the molasses is vegetal with chesnuts, tea, earthy with tobacco. 9,1:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with roasted wood notes like chocolate, espresso, nuts, sweet, spicy with cinnamon, warm, smoky, meaty, industrial with burnt rubber and tar, oily, medicinal, fruity with tropical, citrus fruits, cherries, fermented and the molasses is floral, slightly minty, vegetal with chesnuts, dark with black tea, herbaceous..

Gets really good towards the end. The smell and start are very restrained for the 65%. We compared it with the Bristol Haromex 1998 and despite the significantly higher %, it only narrowly beats it. But despite all that, a nice continental Caroni that offers all the dirty tones you expect.

I do like this alot. The nose is vinous at a very first moment, then you get the nice garage dirt, some fruits after, like melon and dried plum. Palate is a smoky, tar, licorice, followed by espresso and bit of mint. Not much sweetness here, which doesn't bother me. What stands out for me is a very good abv integration and a rich mouthfeel. Very nice appealing color. Makes you look forward to putting your nose in the glass. The first nose impression is rather reserved, more on the wood/caramel side. Then the dirty aromas also appear. Also slightly dried fruits. On the palate then clearly more power. First on the woody aroma and spice, then with air more and more the dirty notes. Especially diesel. Then also tobacco. All well integrated, the ABV is clearly noticeable but fits well with the profile. The finish then long on the dirty and spicy side. I like it. Nice sample for continental aging.

It actually has everything an HTR needs. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not well integrated and disturbs at first. All the dirty notes are well balanced with a small hint of sweetness. The finish is a bit bitter but pleasant.

Great representative from the 1998 vintage. Round, sweet, tart wood and spicy notes, the dirty HTR profile is perfectly integrated. This release is one of the absolute top class among continental Caronis.

Aroma: very fruity fresh and sweet aroma, with smoky paint notes in the background, spicy, lots of spices and tropical fruits (somewhat similar to Barbados), collected dense aroma. Taste: sweet, dense, a sea of exotic fruits, paint, the fortress feels pungent, but very collected. The aftertaste is long, citrus-fruity with paint and varnish notes. Аромат: очень фруктовый свежий и сладкий аромат, с лакокрасочными дымными нотами на заднем плане, пряный, много специй и тропических фруктов (чем-то похож на Барбадос), собранный плотный аромат. Вкус: сладкий, плотный, море экзотических фруктов, краска, крепость чувствуется колкий, но очень собранный. Послевкусие долгое цифтрусово-фруктовое с лакокрасочными нотами.

Caroni 1998 HTR Cadenhead's Cask Strength Dated Distillation Cadenhead's 175th Anniversary Distilled: 12.1998 Bottled: Summer 2017 Aged 18 Years 65.8% One of 228 Bottles Pot Still Color: Chestnut Nose: Full-bodied, sweetish with roasted aromas - toffee, leather, chestnuts and chewing tobacco alternate with the typical Caroni rubber. Hmmm, is that crispy pork knuckle too!? (no, I haven't just eaten nor am I having hunger hallucinations) Woody, more precisely smells like wet wood. But there are also fruit aromas: stone fruit and plum in Madeira. Gets sweeter and tastier over time when standing. Tar and petroleum are there somewhere too, but for me they are not in the foreground. Taste: Extremely powerful! Initially still sweet and oily in the mouth, with jam, coconut and surprisingly round. When swallowing, the full power comes, mainly in the form of spices (pepper) and rubber taste. Juicy delicious with lots of gingerbread, liquid toffee concentrate, leather, cocoa, chewing tobacco and wood. Finish: Really very long, strong and intense, spicy and oily at the same time. Warms massively and endlessly from deep inside. Sweetish oily aftertaste. Some herbs and slightly bitter in the finish. Conclusion: A really great rum - recommended.
