Thompson Bros. New Yarmouth Jamaican Rum 1994
People already deep into 1994 New Yarmouth will feel at home here: dominant coconut, dark caramel, chocolate and roasty espresso notes over a spicy, tannic base at 59.1%. Several tasters call it one of the "etwas schwächeren" of that vintage — a touch simpler and less balanced than its siblings — but still a very likeable, rounded pour with dried fruit and a long dry finish.

Today there's a 4-rum flight New Yarmouth 1994. One of my favorite profiles, Appleton 21yr goes SVW. #4 goes to Thompson Bros. A bit woodier, simpler, from memory very similar to Kill Devil. #3 the Valinch & Mallet. More balanced, a bit softer, less strong (as far as you can speak of that in the 60% range) and additionally a pleasant biscuit/baked goods note. #2, now it gets tight, the Excellence Rhum. Hammer nose with a wonderful animal note like Caroni 21 Extra Strong, a bit woodier in the mouth. Coconut and dried apricot. #1 goes to Swell de Spirits. Very strong, round and balanced. Dried apricot, which I like very much. In the mouth the hammer, warm, a bit less wood than the others, long, great finish.

Beautifully sweet, creamy, like caramel. Great choice for rum lovers who want to transition from sweet syrups to pure distillate. New Yarmouth 1994 rarely disappoints. This is a great choice you'll always be happy to return to.

In the blind tasting, I would have guessed Foursquare. However, somewhat darker and toastier with little fruitiness. On the palate creamy, spicy and relatively dry. Beautiful bottling for a top rating but complexity on the palate is missing.
Review by Mirco
A robust New Yarmouth with dominant coconut notes, dark caramel, chocolate, and roasted aromas. A spicy base carries the profile, which remains surprisingly balanced and accessible despite its high intensity. A successful blend of power and harmony.

The alcohol has quite a tang on the nose. Despite the alcoholic notes, woody and fruity aromas are recognizable. Coconut and cookies are also recognizable. But Thompson's 26-year-old NY reveals its full potential on the palate. Pastry, coconut, intense, creamy, espresso and dark chocolate, to name but a few. The long and dry finish is dominated by roasted flavors, wood and something burnt. I like it very much.

04.09.2022 Meeting up for a nice after event party at my hotel. Good rum and food spread over a full day. Nose Wood, light roasted, fruits, light caramel, glue, faint marzipan, light ginger. Palate Medium dry, oily, wood, light roasted, fruits, glue, light caramel, light ginger, faint chocolate, medium dry. Finish Long, wood, roasted, medium dry, coconut, tannins, light ginger.

8,7:On the nose, the attack is immediately very pleasant with tropical fruits, coconut and confectionery notes, caramel from roasted wood like biscuits, pastry. The wood is spicy with baking spices, a cinnamon is the most obvious and roasted with nuts, vanilla and burnt sugar, as the molasses is a but vegetal. After airing the rum, the notes from bourbon ageing intensify with yellow fruits and citrus like orange peel, lemon peel, apricot, juicy oranges, the molasses is herbal and flowery.Very round, as the glue is more secondary note. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is spicy and salty at first, there are vanilla and ginger, tropical fruits and bourbon yellow with citrus, coconut come in the second wave. The wood is roasted with walnut, coffee, milk chocolate and leather, very creamy. After resting, the fruits become dried with apricots and dates, a bit bitter and dry, the wood more burnt and molasses herbal, a bit waxy. 8,7:The finish is long, woody and dry, a bit tannic, sweetness neutralizes tannins with honey, candied fruits. Almost all the notes from palate linger on with some earthy, cigar note in the end...Delicious. Edit:2.8.25

Today a tasting with seven bottlings of the 1994 New Yarmouth: Thompson Brothers, Royal Cane, Kill Devil, Rum Sponge, Ron Artesanal, FRC Bottles Shop and Maolt, Grain & Cane. The Thompson Brothers is one of the fruitier NYs with a nice currant note, but somehow quite simple. Good rum, but at the bottom of today's line-up.

A really outstanding New Yarmouth. Even when pouring, very intense aromas of pastries, tropical fruits, and spices. Very long finish. For me, the tannins are a bit distracting but otherwise brilliant.

Had hoped for a bit more. Not on the level of the RA NYE 94.

The 1994 New Yarmouths are all very similar in their basic character and usually differ only in nuances. This rum is no exception, but it puts the typical markers into an almost too agreeable and easy-to-drink frame, which means it lacks the occasional sharp edge to stand out from the other representatives of this vintage.

On the nose, the classic NY94 profile, but here with quite a bit of coconut and a subtle glue note. Definitely very inviting. On the palate, relatively sweet and slightly artificial. But again, lots of coconut, dried fruits, and spices. I really like it.

New Yarmouth lineup. Nice coconut nose with plenty of fully ripe fruits. On the palate, there’s also chocolate. But the coconut is definitely dominant. A very nice, rounded New Yarmouth. Really great.
Review by TheRhumhoe
Thompson Bros offers a quality New Yarmouth that combines strength and finesse. The nose starts with glue and then moves towards softer notes of coconut and caramel. The profile reveals its power with pastry notes, slightly varnished oak, spices (pepper, chili, vanilla, cinnamon), and exotic fruit aromas (banana). It’s varied, balanced, yet very present. The attack on the palate is intense, strongly marked by coconut, all kinds of pastries, caramel, then dried and exotic fruits. Then come many roasted, toasted, and burnt notes, going as far as dark chocolate and espresso coffee. There is a nice concentration of spices and a rich oak that aromatically softens the palate despite the displayed power. The glue note from the nose discreetly returns to the taste buds. It’s a powerful but smooth profile where the alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, drier and tannic on the wood but still with beautiful pastry and indulgent notes of coconut, dark chocolate, coffee, and tropical fruits. The spices as well as the roasted and honeyed notes give good depth at the end of the mouth. A very nice bottling, both complex and accessible, powerful and yet rounded.

Very dark, very roasty, much less fruity and less sweet as the SBS in comparison. Has what of dark chocolate with espresso bean splitter and sea salt! In terms of complexity he could put a little more on the bank but overall still very tasty!

A pleasant, round, and good, but not outstanding representative from NY!
Review by Mentalo
One of the somewhat "weaker" 1994 New Yarmouths. Brings relatively a lot of sweetness, spices, vanilla, coconut. Not as well balanced and complex as other bottlings of the vintage. But still a nice rum.
Review by Lot-NAS
I am kind of disappointed, it feels unbalanced and like a mixture made from everything what NY can be but without any aspect really standing out.

SITS 25 Taste like a quality old Barbados with some coconut, but doesn't taste like a New Yarmouth.

Sweeter than I expected, rich and excellent

Vintage 1994. With 8.6 out of 10, it belongs to the better ones that have come into my glass.
