Thompson Bros. Hampden Jamacian Rum JHK DOK 2009
Honey, glue and sour green-fruit esters over grilled pineapple — this is Hampden's DOK mark, but a tamer one than the label suggests. Twelve years of continental aging sanded the edges, so several tasters found more sweetness and honey than the ester bomb they braced for. One even joked you could "write Don Papa on ester." Funky, mineral, and hot at 62.1%.

How does Thompson Bros. Hampden Jamacian Rum JHK DOK 2009 taste?
Aggregated from 30 community reviews.
Honeyed, funky DOK — tamer than expected Most enjoy it as a rounder, honey-forward DOK, though some expected more ester punch and found the sharp acidity or the alcohol bite tiring. A funky Hampden that split expectations.

Nice Hampden, although I would have expected a little more ester in a DOK. Alcohol well integrated.

Here I had expected much more... strangely, you taste here the 3 years more in the barrel not great out in contrast to the known 2009 DOKs. Unfortunately, both on the nose and in the taste quite exhausting, cutting and pungent alcoholic, almost reminiscent of vinegar. I miss the nice pastry sweetness here, the vanilla cream, all the yellow fruit and generally the fruitiness is barely present here. For me, unfortunately, an overall somewhat disappointing DOK.🤷🏼♂️

#4234 03.09.2023 this was a nice blind tasting where I saw the black Glencairn tasting glasses for the first time. First off, price to quality is pretty good. A fruity thing with nice esters and I'd say some nice funk as well. Needs to rest for a good while to release all the flavours and remove the bite from the ABV. The empty glass is nice and has some polish and light dried fruit.

Very ambivalent here since one may not actually believe that one is drinking a DOK here. The nose is good but not intense. The taste is a lot of honey until the finish with ester notes that remain very much in the background. You could also be really bad and write Don Papa on ester, but then it is not quite so bad.

A very nice DOK, the cask gives light notes of fresh wood and some vanilla to the typical ester bomb. This makes it a little more moderate overall than I would have expected given the color. This text has 221 characters.

I miss a little the creamy-buttery notes.

Challenging, sometimes even a little exhausting, but enormously fun. Who needs oak influence when you can have such a distillate? It's not something I always need to have in my glass, but sometimes I find this exciting world of aromas quite impressive and thoroughly delicious.

Hoher Ester Gehalt, aber vor allem stört mich die dominante Säure.

incredibly mineral and austere Hampden.

A bottle of Doc, the most powerful brand of Hampden, and cool to taste it with continental aging. It's impossible to mistake. Full of lemon. Lacquer. Acidic. Unripe fruit. Herbaceous. Sweeter and fruitier in taste, yet delicate, with a very noticeable level of esters. Not the most estery I've tasted, but very strong.

Sour ester, the grilled pineapple. For nen DOK rather the tamer category. Age has sanded down the edges a bit. The sour note is interesting.
Review by Henry Davies
Not the classic DOK notes I expected. Somewhat more round and balanced. The nose is spicy with lemon and fermented notes. Mouth brings honey and glue with some pungent notes. Finish is shorter with honey and confection and some barrel and oak. It’s not the wild ride I was anticipating but a solid Hampden

Read full review →It's not something you will drink a lot of in one sitting. It is pretty intense stuff and can leave anything you drink afterwards seeming quite tame in comparison. If you are looking for high ester funky Jamaican rum then this is a good choice. It's keenly priced and (hopefully)...
