A much sweeter nose than its 1997 sibling, with oak, caramel and tropical fruit to the fore and machine shop flavors a little in the background, but once you've analyzed them, they seem quite present. A fresh, vegetal side is also present, but much less pronounced than in the 1997. The palate is smooth, full, aromatic and complex. The finish is long, with woody, bitter and caramel aromas gently taking over. A much more consensual rum than the 1997, better in a way but also less interesting.

The test included the WDC 1997, WDC 1998 and TheRumCask 1997. The loser, if you can call it that, was the WDC 1997 for me personally. The TRC 1997 and the WDC 1998 were for me personally equally strong in their own way.

Nose Medium intense, round, wood, tar, faint rubber, diesel, light mint, light medicinal, mango. Palate Warm, wood, light roasted, light medicinal, anise, medium dry, light caramel, light mango, light tar, faint rubber. Finish long and warm, wood, light rubber, light tar, light ginger, light mint, light berries. Empty glass, Tar, light rubber, light mint, light caramel, light cherry, anise.

In direct comparison, I like it better than the 1997, nicely rounded and not particularly complicated to drink.
