Samaroli Demerara Dark Rum 1991

Opinions land all over the map here. Fans of the 1991 KFM Demerara profile love the wall of wood, leather, pencil shavings and dark chocolate; others find it too bitter, a touch anonymous, and short on complexity for the age. Palate is drier and less busy than the big nose promises, with a tannic, cocoa-bitter finish. The 45% carries more weight than the number suggests.

The community says
  • Dark chocolate depth
  • Full nose
  • But: Very bitter

Dark, woody, bitter Demerara sipper Loved by KFM-profile fans for its dark wood, leather and dark-chocolate depth. The catch: heavy bitterness, a drier and simpler palate, and a short-to-medium woody finish leave some cold.

Borderline bitterness as usual with the commercial profile. Despite the dilution, the rum doesn't seem thin at all!

Very spicy and woody with lots of bitters. Chocolate dark fruits lots of wood influence, leather pencil. Pleasant sweetness on first contact in the mouth. On the whole, too much bitterness for me.

Guyana

Avg Rating 8.4/10 over 1,600 Rums

Guyana is the last home of the wooden still, and the only rum country where the place on the label is almost never the place the rum was made. Its rum, called Demerara after the river, went from 109 distilleries to one, and the estates that closed live on as marks: codes for a recipe, not for a machine. Reading them is the whole skill.
