Roasted nuts, vanilla and young oak lead here, with a nougat-toffee sweetness and flashes of orchard fruit, mint and menthol that fade with air. Several tasters swore it was a Barbados rum, even mistaking it for Foursquare on a blind pour. Delayed tasting of the rum from 04.12 of the RumX Advent calendar 2023: Wow, I like this, a potent rum! What, this is a rum from the USA, a Privateer? I think I never had it in the glass before, but I would have guessed a medium-aged and medium-good Clarendon.

Sensation of Obstler (continental fruit basket) on the nose and palate. Combined with a noticeable sweetness akin to honey and caramel. Alcohol integration is not perfect but acceptable. Notes of perfume and soap on the finish.

Pleasant, but somewhat nondescript. Quite restrained on the nose, honey sweetness meets subtle caramel and some spices and wood influences. On the palate, the picture is flanked by quite present spicy sharpness and roasted aromas, the alcohol does not feel completely perfectly integrated. Basically a pleasant release, unfortunately with a few flaws.

Day 4 RumX calendar. Unfortunately, this rum doesn't grab me at all, I find it quite alcoholic and sharp. The flavor profile is the one I don't really need. I would never have guessed. But it broadens the horizon, that's what makes it fun.

RumX Advent 4.12.23 Very nutty on the nose, smells like Frangelico, gummy bears, coffee, vanilla. On the palate roasted aromas, wood, sharpness. Somehow disappointing on the palate. Not my release.

Rum Advent #4 Tasting this blindly highlighted a lot of flaws in this rum. Privateer profile is not one that I like a lot, even this one selected by Luca Gargano doesn't change my mind. A lot of young wood and vanilla, plus some polish, not so much more going on there.

At first I thought I was going to taste a Foursquare. Really smooth, fruity and woody. Confirmed at first taste but also with a lot of mint. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not well integrated enough. Surprising profile.

Honey, coconut, caramel notes on the nose. I'm starting to associate coconut with rums from Privateer. On the palate, all the nose notes appear, slightly overshadowed by less integrated alcohol. Rum is okay, but I probably don't need to repeat.

RumX Advent calendar 04.12.23: Phew, it doesn't get easier. For me, the rum stands at the crossroads of different styles (British/Spanish, Pot/Column), combining both wood and coffee notes as well as fruit brandy-like fruit notes. High intensity, I'd estimate >63%. Maturation at least partially tropical (<10 years), possibly continental on top. Several styles are possible, from higher-end Spanish to Column Guyana to various exotics. Because of the fruit notes and to bring some variety, today I guess exotic: a Beenleigh, possibly one of the newer RumClub releases.

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 4 Exceptionally round profile on the nose, checking boxes from all categories and all in equal amount. Opens with coconut husks, dried dates and an overwhelming amount of roasted and raw nuts. The bitterness slowly develops into a creamy sweetness, off-set by lemon oils. The heart is fresh and flowery combining the roasted nuts with a cool twist. Nice, but a minor downside is that the alcohol stings, even after being left out for a while. On the tip of tongue again and immediately very nutty. It’s less intricate than the nose, and very ‘bourbon-esque’ as a result. However the fruits do go through a lovely evolution from coconut husks, over apples and pears into a blue grape tail. The finish is rather unexciting and not much different from a shot of bourbon: sweet and malty. Reading some of the other reviews, I find them to be rather harsh. The profile is very Bajan-like, not extremely complex, but round, and rich. All-in-all an interesting experience, and I’m glad I had the chance to try this. But for Europeans the price on this is just too high.

Calendar #4 / blind I also briefly thought of Foursquare, but I can't really reconcile the strong mint/menthol note there. Otherwise vanilla, lots of barrel, light roasted aromas and a medicinal sharpness. On the palate also quite sharp and at the same time a bit watery. You taste what you smell, plus apple and pear. Could be some adulterated Plantation Foursquare 🤷♂️ With some time in the glass, mint and menthol almost completely disappear.
