The Duchess Foursquare Barbados 21 1999
"You can taste old and quality, but nothing unique," as one taster put it — and that captures the split here. This 21-year Foursquare from The Duchess reads dirtier and oakier than the usual coconut-and-vanilla Barbados, with chocolate-orange, marzipan and a tar/fuel edge some notice on the finish. At 60.2% it runs hot, and a couple of tasters found the alcohol poorly integrated.

A pretty well rounded Foursquare with nice fruits and lovely spicy touch. Oily palate with a medium finish. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass is nice and I can pick up a light marzipan note.
Review by Johannes
Borderline alcohol content, but surprisingly complex for a Foursquare with chocolate-orange notes.

Einen schönen Foursquare kurz vorm Tagesabschluss. Relativ fruchtiger Barbados Rum. Auch am Gaumen echt fruchtig vor allem Kokosnuss ist hier erkennbar, nichts für Rumanfänger ;-) Kann man mal machen, aber mehr auch nicht ;-)

This is not your mild coconut driven Barbados, packed in vanilla. From the start Is feels dirty and heavy on the oak and the finish has some tar/fuel notes to it. Only after a while in the glass does the lighter aromas get noticed. The nose and tongue gets very different experiences. Reminds me very much of the Alta Gama FS 21y.

Tasted at SITS’24 Opens like classical Foursquare with coconut flesh, pineapple husks, nougat-milk chocolate and malt. Very accessible with a flowery top note. Continues on the same trend on the palate, but with an interesting development of mixed peppers and chili. It’s dry, with lots of burnt sugars and fruit tannins, leading into an astringent mouthfeel. The finish is medium in length; sweet, yet chili-hot and minty. Atypical sensation for FSQ.

... Foursquare je destilerka z Barbadosu produkujici uzasne rumy ke kazdodennimu popijeni. Je to rum, ktery oceni zejmena rumari, kteri maji plne zuby cukru a hledaji jemny, nasladly rum plny kokosu, vanilky, cokolady a karamelu. Proste prijemne a nijak agresivni chute.

Tasted at Spirits in the sky Brussels 2024. Nice foursquare, with not as much bourbon notes as I am used to from the distillery.

09/02/25: tasted alongside Foursquare 2008. An interesting, atypical Foursquare. The aroma was rather muted for me, but the palate made up for that. Different profile than I'm used to, maybe because of the 21 yo ageing?

With this I do not understand it's high rating. The alcohol integration is terrible. The nice orange peel does not help this one in the end. Besides this, there is just a lot of young sweetish foursquare
