Velier Clarendon Monymusk MBS 2010
Blind, most people guess Barbados or Foursquare, not Jamaica — there's almost no funk here. What you get instead is grated coconut, vanilla, milk chocolate and ripe tropical fruit over light oak and pepper. Creamy, rounded and surprisingly easy at 62%. A few tasters wish it had more edges, but most find it a gentle, "pastry-forward" Clarendon that rewards 20 minutes in the glass.

How does Velier Clarendon Monymusk MBS 2010 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Coconut, vanilla, cocoa — Jamaica without the funk Loved as a soft, coconut-and-cocoa Clarendon that drinks like a Foursquare, not a funky Jamaican. The catch: low ester, short-to-medium finish, and some find it too tame.

Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
On the nose, it's unmistakably Jamaican, and very fruity. Sweet, dried fruits (apricot and mango). A little wood, vanilla and milk chocolate. The nose is very gourmand and accessible, but not very complex. On the palate, there's pep but the alcohol is perfectly integrated. It's greedy, with exotic fruits shaping the profile. Then there's some lovely wood, tobacco and spice. Very pleasant on the palate, a pleasure to savor. The finish is long, with a very fruity profile. The conclusion is simple: a beautiful Jam', perfectly balanced but above all very accessible.

Nice underdog in the Jamaica range. Zero funky but all the more fruity and palatable after banana bread, milk chocolate with hazelnuts, black pepper, wood, honey and cocoa. very tasty and still relatively affordable and readily available! 😃👏🏼

I was expecting much more! A good rum that does not take off, however. The "sweet/pastry" aromas are barely hinted at, coconut and vanilla prevail. You can feel the imprint of continuous distillation, which in my opinion does not always succeed in giving magical rums. Medium unimpressive finish. It does not sound like a Jamaican at all, but a Barbados.
Review by DomM
High quality column still which is very enjoyable - yet the alcohol is clearly noticeable. Would not have guessed Clarendon but there is just a little extra touch of fruits alongside your classic (high quality) column still notes which adds an interesting twist.

I tasted this rum again years later. I'm now more familiar with Jamaican distilleries. My opinion of the pastry register hasn't changed, here no fruity funk but lots of greed, essentially woody (coconut, vanilla, spices, blond tobacco, nuts). Almost a foursquare profile 😅Super nice. It went out at 100€ a keel, a bargain at that price today.
Review by Thunderbird
A very good, but not outstanding MM, I miss the corners, edges and intensity. It has all the important markers (tropical fruit, vanilla, pastry, honey, some cocoa), but everything is very soft... and drinkable. There are much better MM

Edit edit: 😉 Opened another fresh bottle (thanks to SaibotZtar) deliciously adjusted upwards again. The price was already good for what it can do. Very tasty, thanks @Serge well chosen. Flavor profile super hit. And a good counter to yesterday's tasting. Edit: After I found the sample with a little bit left in it, I had to try it again. It was worth getting a bottle of it back then. But still had to adjust it down a bit.

"Quite simply my favorite in the cellar. Coconut, fruity, cocoa, intense, complex but not aggressive, it's really my style! To sum up, my tasting notes: On the nose: Coconut, Cocoa, Viennese pastries, Tobacco, Peaches. On the palate: Dried fruit, Coconut, Viennese pastries, Cocoa, Almond, Woody, Creamy, Delicious, Concentrated Finish: Cocoa, Tropical fruit, Peppery".

Another great Velier in my mind. Once rested you get all the wonderful flavours from the glass even without lifting the glass to your nose. An intense very well balanced Clarendon. Fruity with light wood and it draws really nice curtains in the glass.

Very good sipper, lots of coconut, needs water. In my opinion a good alternative to Velier Antigua.

8,7:On the nose, the first thing we get is caramelized-like pastry, on a bit roasted touch, with some parfum on high tropical fruits estery rum. It becomes spicy and bourbon-like with some yellow fruits-apricot, orange peel, then coconut, burnt sugar and a bit vegetal. Aeration brings out more robust notes as toasted wood, roasted nuts and chocolate, fruits are now candied. Out of nowhere rubber arises... Giving the rum some nice rest, it becomes thicker with dark molasses, sweet cocoa, dried fruits and is a bit smoky. The rum is now very round and balanced. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is creamy with pastry and bourbon yellow fruit notes in. Becomes a bit dry and syrupy as yellow fruits become dried, with sweet spices, vanilla, honeyed and caramelized wood. Underneath are some musty/ashy notes. The rum is delicious and warm now, there are nuts, ginger, citrus and medicinal notes. When well rested, as on the nose, the dark side of the palate arises with thick molasses and is a bit roasted, going more perfumed and with some rose water, underpined with a hint of dried fruits. 8,3:The finish is long, woody, dry, quite fresh, a bit astringent, bitter with with tannins, yellow fruits. If we really wait, becomes warm with some baking spices, pastry notes and later tastier with milky cocoa and dried fruits underneath. Edit:31.12.25, an upgrade 0,1

I would never have come across Monymusk blind. Maybe not even to Jamaica. Really shallow vanilla notes, Belize/Foursquare-like. Super relaxed sipper, also suitable for beginners who want to try a high %.

Another tasting a few years after the first. I remembered a much more exuberant profile. Here, the nose is rather discreet. You can tell where the rum comes from, and you can make out a few esters, but the profile is restrained. On the palate, however, it's much better than I remember. Wood, caramel, esters, ripe fruit, coconut, vanilla. Very pleasant. Nice length on identical markers.

My last addition from the series, stood here for a long time, often tasted, but still no tasting notes...? Not at all...Nose: fruity-sweet-spicy attack. Right away with coconut and cream toffee, plus ripe peach and tangerine. The sweetness almost goes towards marshmallow. Behind that, cherry wood, a light smoky note and cocoa powder. Delicious and pleasant.Palate: intense and complex. Dry and slightly bitter at first, then salty before moving into spicy. Here then tart nutmeg with pecan, vanilla and then slightly towards umami. Out the back lemon zest with apple, but slightly metallic note and fresh green branches. A really good Mony taster.
Review by mto75
On the nose I have coconut and tropical fruit, especially vanilla croissants 😋 The palate is very spicy with lots of licorice. A really good Monymusk!
Review by Christoph
Fruity monymusk in combination with cocoa that is fun.
Review by Santo
Delicious! A lovely pastry delicacy with a hint of yellow fruit.
Review by Fuwi
Quite a complex rum that, contrary to expectations for a distillate from Jamaica, is not an ester bomb but rather phenolic. In between vanilla and pepper, a relatively metallic hint. For me, the alcohol is quite dominant; the burning in the esophagus distracts from the flavors in the finish.
Review by Timo Groeger
And a nice Clarendon afterwards. Nose is very woody, also cocoa and vanilla are recognizable. On the palate then rather a bit sweetish. For me, chocolate stands out. Otherwise also some vanilla and wood.
Review by FabiDram
Blind guessed Foursquare.
Review by Stylo
I was looking for trying this rum, as up until now NRJ has always delivered a wonderful rum Experience! The nose is quite powerful, as the alcohol is pretty strong, then the fruity flavors starts to coming through (peach, apricot, coconut), followed by wood and vanilla. The palate is a total explosion: it starts really sweet, peaches that almost seems like covered in syrup, then the heat from the alcohol kicks in, followed by vanilla and a peppery note, finishing with a slightly bitter sensation, like lemon pith or peach peel. The finish in medium, with more wood and dried apricot. Strangely enough, I do not get a ton of esters, but in this case, there is so much more to enjoy!
Review by TheRhumhoe
Unique Clarendon from the NRJ series to date, this rum offers an unusual profile for a Jamaican. The nose is very round, characterized by a very present coconut, embellished by spices (vanilla, chili) and wood that gradually settles in the glass. The pastry notes are very concentrated (pastries, marzipan) and amplify the indulgence. The profile takes off a bit more on esters, glue, cocoa, tobacco and roasted notes (nuts) as you taste. A quite powerful nose, very indulgent and rather complete. The attack on the palate is creamy, full of coconut, pastry notes (toffee, caramel, marzipan) and chocolate that bring roundness. You find roasted wood, tobacco, coffee, quite a few spices (chili, pepper, vanilla) but also a hint of glue. A gourmand Jamaican, different from the ester monsters and more balanced. The profile strangely resembles a Foursquare, both powerful and drinkable. The alcohol is very well integrated. There is a long finish, warm, round and concentrated, especially on coconut, vanilla and pastry notes. Darker influences of cocoa, coffee, leather and spices previously mentioned contrast the profile and give it more character, but the whole remains indulgent. A less extreme profile than other NRJs released, more contained and diversified.
Review by TheJona'Spirits
👃 Intensity and concentration. Tropical fruits (banana, mango) and orchard fruits (peach, apricot) well ripe and dressed with a tropical woodiness of vanilla, toasted coconut, and island spices (pink peppercorns, mild chili). An earthy aspect on cocoa shell, honeyed sap, and dried tobacco. Beautiful combination of soft esters and glue. The 62° is almost discreet. 😋 Warm, powerful, and paradoxically pastry-like, it directly reflects the nose. A beautiful association of toasted coconut, vanilla, and tropical fruits (flambéed and sweet banana). The woodiness is dry and more present than on the nose, developing flavors of caramelized almond candies with chili! (I just invented a candy recipe 🤩). ⛳ Warm, long, lively, spicy and vanilla woodiness, tropical fruits cooked in a still warm pot, some candied citrus notes, pepper, Van Houten cocoa, light freshness on the tongue. 💡 Very good Monymusk full tropical and one of the best "young" representatives along with Habitation Velier 2010.

Great number. Jamaica meets Antigua. I'd probably be more blind to the latter. Great coconut, chocolate combination with vanilla, banana, a nice creaminess and tropical fruits. But also spicy aromas such as tobacco. Esters are less noticeable, but the tropical ripeness is. Really great for the price.
Review by Volkmar Weber
Very warm, earthy Jamaican with bananas, chocolate and no acidity, funk, esters. Toasty aromas but hardly any tannins or bitterness. Needs to settle down, 20 minutes in the glass works wonders. Not mega complex, but solid and round.
Review by Skyfly
Jamaica without Hampden Tasting: very tasty Monymusk. Lots of tropical fruits and coconut, plus some wood and light spices from nose to finish. On the nose a bit of glue and on the palate pastry. Super tasty.
Review by Christian Rudt
On the nose, tropical fruity aromas with some coconut flatter you. Since it's also quite woody, I gave the rum some time. Unfortunately, the profile marked by almonds, tropical fruits and light spice and again plenty of coconut doesn't fully convince me taste-wise. Nice and strong, but I clearly miss the "I have to try it again" feeling
Review by Basti
Here I probably wouldn't have landed in Jamaica blind and certainly not with a Monymusk. The profile clearly goes towards Foursquare, Belize or even NY94 for me. Very round Jamaican without funk with great value for money!
Review by Serge
High quality column still rum that does not taste like Jamaica at all. Coconut, wood, vanilla, pastry. Fruits come rather restrained and only after a while in the glass. Aftertaste quite short and unspectacular.
Review by Marcel.
Amazing rum, it feels a little shy on the nose and then it’s a bomb on The palate. Very sweet, fruity, creamy, spicy, complex and punchy flavors. Has definatly lots of foursquare vibes. Very pleasant around mid palate where I get a lot of pastry cream vibes. Nice sweet roasted metallic long finish. Impressive that it’s only 9 years old.
Review by Rumpalumpa
Definitely not what you expect from Jamaica, but a good example of what column still can do. Blind, I would have placed it in Belize. Lots of wood, warm spices, and coconut. On the palate, it becomes even more complex with a bit of moisture.

This might be finally my first Monymusk rum that i have tasted. So maybe take this review with a little bit of grain of salt On the nose: Very mild on the nose for a 62 %rum. Woody, vanilla and cononut notes dominate the nose profile. Underneath that there are some spices and molasses notes. Nice, round profile in overall. Taste: At first, i noticed how round this is. Woody notes, molasses notes. Spices. Coconut notes.High abv comes in nice peppery notes on the profile. Then you get the creamy mouthfell and sweetness from honey notes. This is delicious. Finish: Sweetness is quite strong at the finish. Lots of vanilla notes. Long finish. Totally different taste profile compared to other Jamaican rums that I have tasted and i dont mean it in a bad way at all. In a blind taste i would have guessed that this was a St.Lucia or El Dorado rum. But I enjoyed this rum and the only critique is that the finish was too sweet for my taste.

Northern Lights Meeting 07/25: Fresh, light, smoky, coconut and tropical fruits. On the mouth fruity spicy with a slight alcoholic touch. Medium-long finish slightly peppery. Very easy to drink and you always discover new facets.

Clarendon Velier Monymusk MBS 2010 is a rum from Jamaica, distilled in 2010 and known for its unique character thanks to aging and specific production processes. The nose mixes rich notes of vanilla, caramel, and honey, with a hint of wood and a light sweetness. The aroma is complex and pleasant, with balanced sweet and woody elements creating an enticing blend. The taste is pronounced, with flavors of vanilla, pepper, almonds, and spices, delivering a rich experience with a long finish. This rum is suitable for lovers of strong and rich flavors with a subtle woody undertone.

Franconian Tasting Gang - 21.03.2025 - Nuremberg: Two Clarendons, the RX1053 from the NRJ series and the RX21819 from the Alex Webb Edition. Those expecting esters will be disappointed with both bottlings. Spice, wood, coconut, a little fruit. Not my favorite Jamaicans from the low-ester range, but solid. In both, the alcohol could be better integrated. Overall, a narrow lead for the NRJ.
Review by HenryL
Northern Lights Meeting July 19, 2025 Wonderful nose. Nice coconut note, a bit of mint. Pleasantly sweet, nice cocoa note. Zero Jamaica, more like Barbados. On the palate Jamaica comes through a bit more. Here it doesn't quite keep up. A bit peppery sharpness, wood and coconut.
Review by kondgab
Reminds me of Foursquare. Both on the nose and the palate you can find coconut, vanilla , cocoa and tropical fruits. Wood is definetely there also. The finish is medium. Price to value ratio is also good.
Review by TheFrenchRefill
It is a very good rum, very elegant and rather complex and concentrated! To drink really in tasting with time to discover the aromatic palette. I really like this rum
Review by Benoit Mahe
A very greedy Jamaican although the nose is not very pleasant.
Review by Oliver
Totally relaxed and delicious rum. In a blind tasting, I would have put it in Barbados rather than Jamaica.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Coconut, spiciness and sweetness dominate. Zero funky, but beautifully intense.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Tasted on the eve of the 14th GRF. I liked it and it was easy to drink. Almost a classic rum profile that leans towards Foursquare. Price/performance is top notch.
Review by Gyuli
Rich aromas of banana, strawberry, melon and tropical fruits. Esters are barely noticeable, and when held in the mouth there is a pleasant tannin sensation along with berry yogurt, raisins, etc. Easy to drink despite the strength, and overall fruit notes dominate, floral and fresh. Among the NRJ series products, this was the second best after Vale Royal.
Review by Roman Lelek
Barva reminds me of honey... In the nose I smell vanilla, clove, cinnamon, spices, wood In the taste less sweetness than in the nose, more wood, a bit of alcohol and a beautiful long finish - you can nicely feel the body of the rum. A bit of fuel from the alcohol, the care at just 62% is noticeable and admitted in the taste. Ideal rum to relax and unwind... for a long calm evening... in this Jamaica you don’t really feel much technical component, in a blind tasting I wouldn’t have assigned it to Jamaica...
