New Yarmouth Rum Sponge No. 5 1994
Most tasters land in the same place: a 26-year tropical-aged New Yarmouth that drinks creamy and dessert-like rather than funky. Coconut, caramel, vanilla and dark chocolate carry it, with dried fruit hanging back. Several note it reads more Bajan than Jamaican on the palate. The recurring catch: lovely on the nose, but a touch linear once you sip.
- Coconut-caramel richness
- Dessert-like nose
- 26 Years tropical age

How does New Yarmouth Rum Sponge No. 5 1994 taste?
Aggregated from 30 community reviews.
Creamy, coconut-caramel aged Jamaican Well-liked and very tasty, with coconut-caramel-vanilla richness. Most agree it leans creamy and a bit linear, losing the petrol/funk note from the nose. A few find the ABV sharp before resting.

On the nose, a mix of dark flavors and masked fruit. But also wood shavings, resin and old varnished wood. The palate is balanced, even if the balance is on the dark, woody side. The banana is so ripe that it's all black, tasting like banana peel filaments. The finish is long and woody, like over-brewed black tea. A beautiful rum that tells a story, a story of fruit drowned in old wood (if that's possible).

#4534 09.01.2024 Sitting at home testing how my tastebuds are doing after change of medication. The iron overtones are slowly subsiding and I hope to be ready for our tasting on Friday. A very nice and fruity rum. Needs to rest for a good while to reduce the alcohol and open up the profile. The palate is spicy and well balanced with some chocolate. The finish is long and warm with a light vegetal note.

Relatively similar to the V&M RX10419 on the nose. Lots of spices, wood, caramel, sweet notes and some chocolate. Everything the nose promises can also be found on the palate. Alcohol very well integrated. For me, on a par with the V&M bottling.

Not overly complex but rich with caramelised sugar, vanilla, Creme brûlée, backing spices and hints of dried fruit. Overall really nice and balanced but also heavily overpriced. The label I find kind of strange. There aren’t any fresh fruits in here for the sponge. Where is the Creme brûlée on the belt?

Relatively little fruit on the nose (but pastries and crème brûlée) and lots of coconut and nuts on the palate. Doesn't quite match the label, but still delicious.

1994 NYE hardly ever disappoints, so it was not surprising to me. Very enjoyable!

Tasted this at SDR23, so my review remains rather concise. A dessert-like experience rich in confections on the nose with notes of vanilla biscuit, bresillienne and crème brûlée. It’s only mildly fruity with a refined mixture of dried fruits and fresh berrymix, adding some tannins and a neat fructose-acidity balance. In the mouth much sweeter than expected, and a wholly different profile. Very Bajan-esque, with a classic coconut-caramel-malt combination. Good, very tasty, but too linear for me. I can’t shake the disappointment that the lovely petrol note from the nose got lost entirely on the palate.

Tasted at SDR23. The taste reminds me of a Bajan style rum.

Today a tasting with seven bottlings of the 1994 New Yarmouth: Thompson Brothers, Royal Cane, Kill Devil, Rum Sponge, Ron Artesanal, FRC Bottles Shop and Maolt, Grain & Cane. The Sponge is quite simple, lots of coconut and also one that reminds me of a good Foursquare.

nice and balanced on the nose, with typical „rum“ flavors, dried fruits, caramel and a hint of polish. It loses on the palate as the ABV is not well integrated and dominates the other flavors. It’s quite sharp on the first sip. Therefore, it needs to rest a while in the glas. Nevertheless a nice rum but bang for bucks ratio is not that good

Ein bisschen wie ein Eiskonfekt. Vollmundig, fast nougatartig und schön intensiv.
Review by Alex1981
A little subdued noae, needs time to open and show a nice fruitiness. Then the palate is a bouquet of overripe fruits, getting really sweet. Finishes on tea that stood for too long, getting a tad bitter.
