Montebello Brut de fut 2010

Anyone who likes an aged agricole that leans gourmand rather than grassy will find their spot here. Ten years in ex-bourbon then ex-cognac casks gives wood, vanilla, candied orange and tropical fruit, with a menthol edge and a whiff of polish. Several tasters call the nose lovely and fruity; the palate turns woody and spiced. Notably soft for a cask-strength bottling.

Montebello 10 years Brut de Fût from the Carrere distillery in Guadeloupe distilled in 2010 is first aged 7 years in American bourbon barrels and then for additional 3 years in former Cognac barrels. During the aging they use a special technique by locking in the filled barrels in steel containers to increase the maturation. After the aging is this rum bottled in 2000 numbered bottles at its natural strength in July 2021. Overall a rich and elegant rum with a gourmet profile with a woody and roasted accent.

Tasting in two stages. First, the nose is charmingly fruity, well marked by candied citrus and pineapple, well balanced with a fine woodiness and a hint of vanilla. The nose is really very pleasant. The palate stands out but not in the best of ways, losing balance and becoming essentially spicy. The super-fruity of the nose is in the background. It's a shame, because this could have been a great rum.

Yoo amigos, Montebello - brut de fut 2010 - 45.3% 🇬🇵 This beautiful baby has been aged for 10 years and 9 months (7 years ex-bourbon and 3 years ex-cognac) in the Montebello cellars, which, despite the brut de fut bottling, gives it roundness and sweetness, as well as a surprisingly low degree for a bdf, due to the very humid cellar environment. The usual Montebello pastry aromas are present, with candied orange and damp wood. All this with a little more length and depth than on the reduced bottlings. Cheers amigos

Nase: Vorallem Vanille und Banane und noch etwas Butter; einfach aber ok Gaumen: wie die Nase, noch etwas Blumig. Hat ja nicht so viel Alkohol - dieser ist aber gut eingebunden. Abgang kurz. Schöner, einfacher Rhum

I have ordered a backup bottle because I think the price to quality is pretty good. The nose is fruity and once rested all the flavours just come at you. Wood and vanilla is trailed by a light note of polish.. The palate is woody with passion fruit, spices and pastries. I get a hint of menthol at the end as well. The finish is long and woody with tropical fruits and a hint of coffee.

Un rhum d'une très grande longueur, très en verticalité, en longueur plutôt qu'en largeur Un grand equilibre mais manque la petite touche de whaou et la complexité pour en faire un rhum d exception

A nose of spices, fruit and varnish. On the palate, I immediately find spices with cinnamon, vanilla and a little pepper on a woody base. The finish is on wood and spices (vanilla, cinnamon). All in all, it's a nice rum, not something exceptional, but a very good spiced rum.

Nice nose on tropical fruits with a very light veil of hydrocarbons in the background. The mouth lacks power and the finish is a bit short, especially since we are on a brut de fût.
